Overthinking can really get the best of us. 
Your story about the filmmaker reminds me of Tony Ferguson who became so focused on himself and developing his skill sets that he stopped sparring..for 3 years! and is on the top of his game!

It really is of utmost importance to feel comfortable in your own skin and make yourself the biggest  competitor. Work everyday to be the better version of yourself!

Well! I just want to say that comparing down us and our skills. That is why we should always avoid it for ourselves.   But competing is okay cuz its makes us more capable to do something with our capability. Thanks for another great vlog.

Sometimes I think one needs to compare themselves with other people not because it's definitely good buy because it's a necessary evil, you'd never know how best or how poor you can be when you lay in just your comfort zone thinking you're the best.

You've got such a ridiculously easy-going style when you talk to the camera... especially at the end there.
I actually came into this video ready to disagree with you... after all, how can you win if you have no idea what the competition is doing, how can you grab ideas and expand on them otherwise... but by the end, I think you really had turned me around.  If we keep thinking about and developing our own style... and... constantly try and improve our craft... it literally doesn't matter what anyone else is doing. 

I think the caveat to that is that you need to be in a place where you are comfortable with your creative style... if you have no idea what you're doing, then sure, you might need to learn off others... but once you've found your niche, then, yeah, I agree, block out all the noise.

Well, first of all thank you so much for sharing your honest opinion about this topic... For me , I feel that sometimes it's good to watch around, yes it's okay to know about competitors, but comparing yourself with another person it's not good for any kind of goal or like it is distraction... For example , I am an architect so sometimes I like to watch other architects work may be they were my classmates... But I never compare myself with them because if I do that , I won't be myself.. As a competitor I will try to develop my skills but if I follow what they are doing , it will ended up with frustration and I would have ended up doubt on myself...

I do suffer a lot of this. Because I try to compare and compete with others. But I do feel that I am so weird that I can't find anyone like myself to compare. So I end up trying to compete with people that are super different than me. But at the same time I don't feel that I put my own creation process in risk by trying to compete with them. I start thinking that I haven't found my niche yet. And it might be such a small one that I will always struggle. But I will never put my creative side at risk to be part of "what's trending" and in vogue.
I'm just a weird lost in this world. But "not weird enough" to dab in that niche either. I know who I Am as a creator an as an artist. I just don't create for business. And that's where I am faulty to my own detriment.

Collectivist or an individualist?

Its a shame that society places most of us in competition with each other, it usually starts off with good intentions, although it can also be a road to hell for most people.

You can't please everyone all the time, its our faults that make us human, everyone has to find middle ground between perfection and failure.
