## Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

I am not a religious person, nor do I share the ideals of the Catholic Church, or any other, but I appreciate and like to visit churches because I find in them a beauty focused on traditions that encourage people to be filled with hope. In my sculptural work many times I tried to emulate certain aspects that Catholics project in their figures, and I did it, many times, as a mockery of the devices that their representatives use to collect the tithe with the manipulation of heavenly rest and other favors they promise to grant. Thus was born Santa Tecla de Internet, a virgin, to whom if you pray and offer some offering (money), can end the connection problems of your local operator.

Churches are undoubtedly special places, because their aesthetics have not changed much during the centuries in which they have been part of history, we can find artistic manifestations that point to the idea that supernatural forces guide our steps, this has made certain parameters are established in the artistic production intended to fill the churches of the world.

The Candelaria church is no different. In fact, it is very similar to many other churches in Venezuela. It is located in Caracas in the plaza bearing the same name, recently restored, along with its plaza, just before its weather-rotted wooden roof collapsed. >No soy una persona religiosa, ni comulgo con los ideales de la iglesia católica, ni de ninguna otra, pero aprecio y me gusta visitar las iglesias por encontrar en ellas una belleza enfocada en tradiciones que alientan a las personas a llenarse de esperanza. En mi trabajo escultórico muchas veces traté de emular ciertos aspectos que los católicos proyectan en sus figuras, y lo hice, muchas veces, como una burla a los artilugios que sus representantes utilizan para cobrar el diezmo con la manipulación del descanso celestial y otros favores que prometen conceder. Así nació Santa Tecla de Internet, una virgen, a la que si le rezas y ofreces alguna ofrenda (dinero), puede acabar con los problemas de conexión de tu operadora local.

>Las iglesias son, sin duda, lugares especiales, pues su estética no ha cambiado mucho durante los siglos en los que han tenido parte en la historia, podemos encontrar manifestaciones artísticas que apuntan a la idea de que fuerzas sobrenaturales guían nuestros pasos, esto ha hecho que se establezcan ciertos parámetros en la producción artística destinada a llenar las iglesias del mundo.

>La iglesia de la Candelaria no es diferente. De hecho se parece mucho a muchas otras iglesias de Venezuela. Está ubicada en Caracas en la plaza que lleva el mismo nombre, hace poco fue restaurada, junto con su plaza, justo antes que se derrumbara su techo de madera podrido por el tiempo. This church was built in 1708 with a very austere neoclassical style on the outside and plagued by a baroque style inside, where the minor marble altars and the high altar covered with gold leaf stand out, as well as the pulpit. On August 2, 1960 the church of Candelaria was declared a National Monument, by extension to the fact that all the temples built before 1830 were worthy of this event.

Its structure has three naves in a rectangular plan, divided by Doric style columns, the head is the presbytery with two side chapels, in one of them rest the remains of the venerable José Gregorio Hernández. It has three frontal accesses and two lateral ones, which have been denied the passage with the placement of two wooden benches at the present time. The facade is composed of three streets, while the lateral facades lack decoration.

Part of the main facade is false, it is only a wall that crowns the structure. It also has a small tower for the bell tower, covered with a net to prevent the entry of pigeons that were pointed out as the cause of much of the deterioration of the church.

Whether due to a miracle or the action of the Caribbean sun, this church has the peculiarity of changing color, sometimes we can appreciate a splendid white that others seems to turn gray and towards the afternoon we can see that the white contrasts with a very clear blue. Before the restoration of 2013 this church had even more contrast so the blue of its facades stood out better. >Esta iglesia fue construida en el año 1708 con un estilo neoclásico muy austero en el exterior y plagado de un estilo barroco en el interior, donde destacan los altares menores de mármol y el el altar mayor cubierto de pan de oro, así como el púlpito. El 2 de agosto de 1960 la iglesia de Candelaria es declarada Monumento Nacional, por extensión al hecho que todas los templos construidos  antes de 1830 se hicieron merecedores de este acontecimiento.
>
>Su estructura cuenta con tres naves en una planta rectangular, divididas entre sí por columnas de estilo dórico, la cabeza se encuentra el presbiterio con dos capillas laterales, en una de ellas reposan los restos del venerable José Gregorio Hernández. Tiene tres accesos frontales y dos laterales, los cuales están tienen negado el paso con la colocación de dos bancos de madera en la actualidad. La fachada está compuesta por tres calles, mientras que las fachadas laterales carecen de decoración.

>Parte de la fachada principal es falsa, es solo una pared que corona la estructura. También tiene una pequeña torre para el campanario, cubierta con una red para evitar la entrada de palomas que fueron señaladas como las causantes de gran parte del deterioro de la iglesia. 
>
>Sea por causa de un milagro o la acción del sol caribeño, esta iglesia tiene la particularidad de cambiar de color, algunas veces podemos apreciar un espléndido blanco que otras parece tornarse gris y hacia la tarde podemos ver que el blanco contrasta con un azul muy claro. Antes de la restauración del 2013 esta iglesia tenía aún mas contraste por lo que destacaba mejor el azul de sus fachadas. This church has a large influx of people, many come from the interior of the country, come to ask favors to the image of a doctor (José Gregorio Hernández) who is said to heal the ills of greeting to those who light a candle, or ask a favor, so we find those who leave flowers and other offerings.

That is why we will always find it full of the faithful prostrated before its altars or following some religious office. It can be said that it is one of the most emblematic churches of Venezuela, even in 1875 it was considered one of the four most notable churches of Caracas, which we could translate as one of the most viral churches of the Venezuelan nation.


>Esta iglesia tiene un gran afluencia de personas, muchas provienen del interior del país, vienen a pedir favores a la imagen de un médico (José Gregorio Hernández) de quien se dice sana los males de saludo a quienes le encienden una vela, o le pide un favor, por eso encontramos quienes le dejan flores y otras ofrendas.

>Es por eso que siempre la encontraremos repleta de fieles postrados ante sus altares o siguiendo algún oficio religioso. Se puede decir que una de las iglesias mas emblemáticas de Venezuela, incluso en 1875 se consideraba una de las cuatro iglesias más notables de Caracas, lo que pudiéramos traducir como una de las iglesias mas virales de la nación venezolana.

It is a quite illuminated church, unlike many other earlier temples built during the colony. This is due to the beautiful natural light that enters through its cedar wood doors when they remain open.

When my father died, my mother, a devout Catholic, asked the parish to officiate masses in his honor, a tradition she repeats every year on the anniversary of his death. She always tries to force me to come, I always refuse, because I consider it a waste of time to participate in the liturgy, since I believe that if God exists, He is within me and not in the words of people who claim to be His ambassadors. Besides, I prefer to wander freely among its nooks and crannies, since I always find something new that I had not noticed on previous visits.

In the square in front of it there is a park where I used to bring my daughter since she was three years old, until she started her school routine, I did it to exhaust her and get her to sleep early, part of the routine was also to buy an ice cream and sit inside the church to drink it. Once, a blessed woman who was attending the evening service, questioned me saying, shouting, that I was disrespecting the church, I answered her that she was the one who was disrespecting the church with her shouting, that we only wanted to enjoy the peace that she was breaking with her scandal, she looked at me furious, but she left us in peace. I just wanted my little daughter to learn to enjoy these wide spaces where you can breathe a lot of tranquility.
>Es una iglesia bastante iluminada, a diferencia de muchas otros templos anteriores, construidos durante la colonia. Esto se debe a la hermosa luz natural que entra por sus portones de madera de cedro cuando estos permanecen abiertos.
>
>Cuando mi padre murió, mi mamá, católica devota, recurrió a la parroquia para que estos oficiaran misas en su honor, tradición que repite cada año en el aniversario de su muerte. Siempre pretende obligarme a venir, yo siempre me niego, pues considero una pérdida de tiempo participar de la liturgia, ya que considero que si Dios existe, está dentro de mi y no en las palabras de personas que dicen ser sus embajadores. Además prefiero vagar libremente entre sus rincones, ya que siempre encuentro alguna novedad que no había notado en visitas anteriores.
>
>En la Plaza que tiene al frente hay un parque al que acostumbraba a traer a mi hija desde que tenía tres años, hasta  que comenzó su rutina escolar, lo hacía para agotarla y lograr que durmiera temprano, parte de la rutina también consistía en comprar un helado y sentarnos dentro de la iglesia para tomarlo. Una vez una beata que asistía al servicio vespertino, me inquirió diciendo, a gritos, que estaba faltando al respeto a la iglesia, le respondí que la que estaba faltando al respeto era ella con sus gritos, que nosotras solo queríamos disfrutar de la paz que ella estaba rompiendo con su escándalo, me miró furiosa, pero nos dejó en paz. Yo solo quería que mi pequeña hija aprendiera a disfrutar de estos amplios espacios de los que se respira mucha tranquilidad.

As part of the celebration of the beatification of José Gregorio Hernández, a store of ritual objects was built under the name of Café El Venerable, a curious thing, since coffee was never sold there, in spite of having the necessary structure to include an open-air terrace to enjoy this holy beverage.

The place destined for this expansion was the lower part of the bell tower. Here we can find the most beautiful Christian trinkets, here they sell small kidneys, lungs and silver hearts, also arms and legs, artifacts that help in the process of requesting miracles and favors to achieve the desired health in charge of the, so named today here, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández.

And this church is the recipient of many Venezuelan traditions. Because another of the deities venerated here is the Virgin of Candelaria, who has her day and her rite, although a man steals the limelight. >Como parte de la celebración de la beatificación de José Gregorio Hernández, se construyó una tienda de objetos rituales de nombre Café El Venerable, cosa curiosa, pues allí jamás se vendió café, a pesar de contar con las estructura necesaria para incluir una terraza al aire libre para disfrutar de este santo brebaje.

>El lugar destinado para esta ampliación, fue la parte baja de la torre del campanario. Allí podemos encontrar las mas hermosas chucherías cristianas, aquí venden pequeños riñones, pulmones y corazones de plata, también brazos y piernas, artefactos que ayudan en el proceso de solicitud de milagros y favores para conseguir la salud deseada a cargo del, tan nombrado hoy aquí, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández.

>Y es que esta iglesia es recipiente de muchas tradiciones venezolanas. Porque otra de las deidades aquí veneradas es la Virgen de la Candelaria, que tiene su día y su rito, aunque un hombre le robe el protagonismo. Churches are unique, special places. Places where we can contrast the beliefs, fervor and tradition of a people. They are recipients of an incomparable artistic legacy, historical source of resources for artists who came under their tutelage through the figure of patronage. They are interesting places, where, in spite of coinciding with Catholic ideals, we can find peace and a spectacular view.

>Las iglesias son lugares únicos, especiales. Lugares donde podemos contrastar las creencias, el fervor y la tradición de un pueblo. Son recipientes de un legado artístico inigualable, fuente histórica de recursos para los artistas que entraban bajo su tutela a través de la figura del mecenazgo. Son lugares interesantes, donde, a pesar de no coincidir con los ideales católicos, podemos encontrar paz y una vista espectacular.
