Many girls drop out of school because they cannot afford to buy sanitary pads.Hundreds of girls are being forced into early child marriage because they parents are too poor to afford sanitary pads.They miss class because some schools lack separate toilets to help them manage their periods.

As a result many end up quitting or doing poorly in school.Susan Wanjera a 12 year old was not so fortunate when she asked her mother for sanitary pads.Her mother told her to look for a husband to provide for her.Such stories are very common. "When my mother does not provide money for sanitary pads,I tear my old clothes and use them instead,"she says.Using such unhygienic methods can increase infection.

Njethu of Mukuro Children Centre says, "The cause of all this is poverty,when you have to choose between buying milk and bread or sanitary pads,most parents choose food."

Kenya promised to supply school girls with pads.President of Kenya signed the Basic Education Amendment Act into law meaning that all school going girls will receive free sanitary pads from the government. 

Education of young girls on personal hygiene should be done on a regular basis,price of  sanitary pads should go down and more countries should start giving out free sanitary pads.
