Hello friends and STEM content enthusiasts.

This time I want to share with all of you a petroleum engineering topic related to the pressure at which an oil formation can be fractured and the reasons why integrity testing should be performed.

### ***Fracture pressure***

<p>

Fracture pressure is the pressure at which the rock structure of an oil formation is constantly deformed.

For this to be understood I explain it in the following way: 

As I have explained in previous post related to the topic of pressures in an oil well, in order to drill a well you have to control the formation pressures found at the bottom of the well, fluids such as oil and gas if they have sufficient pressure can migrate to the surface, and with drilling activities can generate friction with components such as drill bit, drill pipe rotating in the borehole, all this can cause a blowout at the surface. 

In order to avoid a surface explosion that can compromise human and equipment losses, a fluid called drilling fluid or also called drilling mud is used, which can be prepared with a base of water and additives such as bentonite (clay) or a base of diesel and other solid additives.

The objective of these drilling fluids is to be able to have a sufficient density to generate a hydrostatic pressure in the well that can work as a back pressure and stop fluids such as oil and gas to stay in the oil formation and not migrate to the surface.

The problem begins when the pressure generated by the drilling fluid is so high that it exceeds the pressure that the oil formation can resist to not be deformed and fracture, in the case that the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling fluid exceeds the fracture pressure that supports the formation, then all the drilling fluid will flow out through the fracture channels, thus losing all the drilling fluid, when all the drilling fluid is lost, the pressure that counteracts the pressure of the formation fluids (formation pressure) is also lost, and this may be another case in which a blowout may occur at the surface. 

### ***What value must the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling fluid have in order not to fracture the formation and be able to contain the formation fluids?***

The density of the drilling fluid must be such that it is greater than the formation pressure and less than the fracture pressure, which is expressed as follows:

### ***What is an integrity test and why perform it?***

<p>

An integrity test also called formation integrity test (PIT) is a test in which it is determined to ensure good cementing in the well, and also to know what is the maximum resistance that supports the formation at a maximum pressure of the drilling fluid.

The values of this test will be used during the productive life of the well, the test basically consists of pumping drilling fluid into the well without return circulation, that is to say that pressure builds up inside the well, the point where the pressure drops is because a small fracture occurs in the formation, and the formation begins to take drilling fluid, so the pressure in the well drops sharply, that break point is the maximum pressure that allows the formation to be fractured. 

The reason why it is necessary to perform a formation integrity test is because it gives us the fracture pressure value, which is very necessary for the design of the drilling fluid density, in turn with this test we can guarantee how subject the casing was after cementing.

Then in the following image we can appreciate the objectives that are intended when a formation integrity test (PIT) is performed:

As can be seen in the yellow arrows, the drilling fluid pumped into the wellbore exerts pressure in all directions of the well, so with the value we get of fracture pressure we are guaranteeing the maximum value of hydrostatic pressure that supports the formation, in turn we also guarantee the quality of the cementation.

Hola amigos y amantes del contenido STEM.

En esta ocasión quiero compartir con todos ustedes un tema de ingeniería de petróleo relacionado a la presión con la que se puede fracturar una formación petrolífera y las razones por las cuales se debe realizar las pruebas de integridad.

### ***Presión de fractura***

<p>

La presión de fractura es la presión con la que se deforma constantemente la estructura de roca de una formación petrolífera.

Para que esto se entienda lo explico de la siguiente manera: 

Como lo he explicado en post anteriores relacionado al tema de las presiones en un pozo de petróleo, para poder perforar un pozo hay que controlar las presiones de formación que se encuentran en el fondo del pozo, los fluidos como petróleo y gas si tienen una presión suficiente pueden migrar hasta la superficie, y con las actividades de perforación se puede generar fricción con los componentes como la mecha de perforación, tubería de perforación girando en la perforación, todo esto puede ocasionar una explosión en superficie. 

Para que no suceda una explosión en superficie que pueda comprometer a pérdidas humanas y equipos, se emplea un fluido llamado fluido de perforación o también llamado lodo de perforación, el cual puede ser preparado con una base de agua y aditivos como la bentonita (arcilla) o una base de diésel y otros aditivos sólidos.

El objetivo de estos fluidos de perforación es el de poder contar con una densidad suficiente que genere una presión hidrostática en el pozo que pueda funcionar como una contrapresión y detener los fluidos como petróleo y gas a que se mantengan en la formación petrolífera y no migren a superficie.

El problema comienza cuando la presión generada por el fluido de perforación es tan alta que supera la presión que puede resistir la formación petrolífera para no ser deformada y se fracture, en el caso que la presión hidrostática del fluido de perforación supere a la presión de fractura que admite la formación, entonces todo el fluido de perforación se ira por los canales de fractura, perdiéndose así  todo el fluido de perforación, al perderse todo el fluido de perforación, se pierde también esa presión que contrarresta la presión de los fluidos de formación (presión de formación), pudiendo ser este otro caso por el que puede ocurrir un reventón en superficie. 

### ***¿Qué  valor debe tener la presión hidrostática del fluido de perforación para no fracturar la formación y poder contener los fluidos de formación?***

La densidad del fluido de perforación debe ser tal que, sea mayor que la presión de formación y a su vez sea menor a la presión de fractura, lo cual se expresa como sigue:

### ***¿Qué es una prueba de integridad y por qué realizarla?***

<p>

Una prueba de integridad llamada también como prueba de integridad de la formación (PIT) es una prueba en la que se determina para garantizar una buena cementación en el pozo, y también para saber cuál es  la resistencia máxima que soporta la formación a una presión máxima del fluido de perforación.

Los valores de esta prueba serán usados durante la vida productiva de dicho pozo, la prueba básicamente consiste en bombear fluido de perforación en el pozo sin que exista circulación de retorno, es decir que se acumule presión dentro del pozo, el punto en donde baje la presión es porque ocurre una pequeña fractura en la formación, y la formación empieza a tomar fluido de perforación, por lo que la presión en el pozo cae bruscamente, ese punto de quiebre es la máxima presión que permite la formación para ser fracturada. 

La razón por la que hay que realizar una prueba de integridad de la formación es porque nos proporciona el valor de presión de fractura, que es muy necesario para el diseño de la densidad del fluido de perforación, a su vez con este prueba podemos garantizar que tan sujeto quedo el revestidor después de una cementación.

A continuación en la siguiente imagen podemos apreciar bien los objetivos que se pretenden cuando se realiza una prueba de integridad de la formación (PIT):

Como se puede ver en las flechas de color amarillo, el fluido de perforación bombeado al pozo ejerce presión en todas las direcciones del pozo, por lo que con el valor que conseguimos de presión de fractura estamos garantizando el máximo valor de presión hidrostática que soporta la formación, a su vez garantizamos también la calidad de la cementación.
