Una vez que se perfora el pozo hasta la profundidad que indique el programa de perforación, se debe completar el pozo, entiendo como completación al arreglo y distribución de ciertos equipos en el subsuelo, esto con la intención de producir petróleo bajo las condiciones más óptimas según sea las condiciones del pozo, del yacimiento y la disponibilidad económica que se tenga para tal fin. Entre las herramientas que se bajan al pozo para completarlo están: mangas de circulación, tubería de producción, empacaduras, niples, mandriles, bombas electrosumergibles, y un sin fin de herramientas que va a depender del tipo de completación elegida para tal pozo. Una vez que el pozo se pone en producción, esté puede declinar su presión y por ende bajar su producción, en otros casos estos pozos se tapan en sus equipos, producto del arenamiento, otros casos es en el que por factibilidad económica es preferible bombear un tapón de cemento y cerrarlo. En fin, todos estos problemas ameritan en muchos de los casos realizar trabajos secundarios, que son llamados en la industria petrolera como operaciones de reacondicionamiento y/o reparación de pozos, entre ellos se pueden destacar trabajos de acidificación, limpieza del pozo, sacar bombas electrosumergibles para reemplazo, cementaciones forzadas, abandono de pozos, entre otros. En muchas ocasiones hay que realizar estudios de factibilidad económica para considerar si resulta económicamente rentable realizar dichos trabajos, de considerarse factible, el objetivo fundamental de las actividades de reacondicionamiento es aumentar la producción de los pozos.
