The Iberian Crusades XIX: Thirteenth-century Christian advance
In the last chapter, I wrote about the battle of Navas de Tolosa of 1212 [see here](https://steemit.com/history/@carlosdaniel/the-iberian-crusades-xviii-battle-of-navas-de-tolosa), this battle that ended with a Christian victory was the most important signal on the changing momentum of the war between Muslim and Christians that started in the year 710.

## The following decades saw the Christians advance further south, conquering more important towns to the falling Almohad Caliphate.

1236: **Cádiz** and **Córdoba** (the old capital of the first caliphate) are conquered by Castilian forces.
1248: After 16 months of siege the city of **Seville** falls to the hands of Ferdinand II of Castile.
1249: The city of **Faro** falls to hands of Afonso III of Portugal, signaling the end of the Portuguese reconquest.

*By 1250 the Muslims are only left with a small enclosure in Granda in the south, painted in green*

## This makes in the end of 1249 the Emirate of Granada the only Muslim controlled territory in Iberian Peninsula.
By this time the Granada Emirate could easily fall into the hands of the Castile Kingdom, yet for a long period of 200 years, the Kings of Castile choose to instead ask for *párias*, a special tribute task paid by Granada for protection.
This allowed the Muslim kingdom to survive and for Castile to consistently receive gold from North Africa that was scarce in Europe, and of course trade goods between both parties involved.

*Santiago the Moor-slayer, a perfect example of religious war symbolism*

## By the middle of the thirteenth century many Kingdoms existed in Iberian Peninsula:
The kingdom of Castile that united with the Kingdom of Leon (modern-day Spain);
The kingdom of Portugal today a republic;
The kingdom of Navarra that existed until 1620;
The Kingdom of Aragon that existed until 1706.

After the thirteen century there will be more wars among Christians than with Muslim, only in the fifteenth century we see a new spike in war, with an invasion of Christian to North Africa, and the end of the Muslim domains in Iberian Peninsula, but that will be the next and last chapter!
