My Broken Leg

My brother and I were once making a movie where we do our own stunts. One stunt involved jumping off a porch; I volunteered to do it although I wish I hadn't. I hesitated to do so, then my brother showed me and he landed perfectly on the couch cushions that were used to cushion my fall. When I finally had the courage to do the stunt it didn't end very well.

He pressed the record button and I started running. When I went over the edge, I realized that I missed the cushions. When I landed I heard a loud snap. I fell on the ground and I felt excruciating pain like I've never felt before. I screamed and my brother came running down. I told him to go get Dad, it took him a long time to do so.

All I could think about was how excruciating the pain was and how my brother did me wrong. I was screaming, "Help me," my cries went unanswered. I thought I was going to die. My dad finally came and he took a look at my leg, it was broken and I think I was bleeding internally. My mom showed up, she was really worried. Dad bribed me to try and get into the van, I couldn't do it. They called the paramedics finally.

The fire department showed up and just seeing them helped ease the pain. Two men named Keith and Gordy helped me roll over, it really hurt. The ambulance showed up and they put me on a stretcher. As they took me to the ambulance I saw my brother in the distance and I couldn't help but feel contempt for him. They shut the doors and attached some sort of device to my finger to make sure my vitals were stable. We were riding to the hospital and whenever they hit a bump I felt horrible pain in my leg. We made it there and I felt the pain go down a little.

They took me to one of their cookie-cutter emergency rooms, they wiped the dirt off my leg and they put me in a hospital gown. They stuck a needle in me that was attached to a tube leading up to a bag with some sort of clear substance called an IV. Some of my blood went up the tube. The nurse cranked the handle and the substance went down the tube and into my wrist. After a short time most of the pain eased significantly and it made me tired. They gave me a cast with Velcro for temporary use until they could give me a real cast. They performed some x-rays on me and it appeared that I had fractured my leg in two places.

Mom asked me if I had wanted the tacos she got for me, I declined so she gave them to the doctors. I watched some TV and waited until the doctor showed up. They said they might have to perform surgery. My mom was scared when she heard that, but after some negotiating, they decided to have my leg set. Apparently there weren't any surgeons available during the time so they had to transfer me to the hospital in Madison.

We made it and it was past midnight. They took me to one of their emergency rooms. It was a large room with frosted windows and a light blue curtain separating me from the other patient. I tried to go to sleep but all the noise around the ER prevented me from doing so. I was hearing a baby cry louder than any baby I've ever heard before, and a movie was playing on the other side of the curtain. I wanted it all to end; it was taking what seemed like an eternity for the doctors to get back to me, I mean how long is it supposed to take to do an operation? Apparently too long.

With every passing second with the sounds of crying and the movie, I became more and more irritated. I was beginning to think that being in the room was worse than the pain I had experienced a few hours ago but when I think about it, the pain seems much worse. I wanted them to just knock me out so they can just get it over with, so that I could be set free.

A while later, my wish was granted. The nurse showed me the syringe and told me to look away, but I wasn't afraid of needles. She put the anesthetics in my bloodstream and took the needle out. A few seconds later, some doctors covered from head to toe in scrubs showed up and waited for me to go to sleep.

I started to feel weird, my vision started to blur and I was feeling more tired than I ever was before. And before I knew it, I was unconscious. I began to drift off, and I was finally at peace for a while, I couldn't feel anything. Nothing was going to disturb me from my slumber as I vanished from this world and entered my own world. It was peaceful like it usually was, the pressure was off and I was finally set free.

I didn't want it to end, but for every dream there has to be an ending. I heard my name and my blurry vision returned. At first I couldn't make a single move. All I could do was open my eyes and wait for my vision to clear. All I could see was a blur; I was blind and immobile until my vision finally cleared. The doctors said I wouldn't remember anything that happened that night, but I remembered every little detail. When my vision cleared I was seeing double. To prove that I remembered, I used intellectual statements like the history of Princess Anastasia, the Russian princess who at age eight was lost, she couldn't remember anything, even her own name. I also said A²+B²C² despite the fact that it was as if I were drunk due to the anesthesia. I started to sing "Every Move You Make," it sounded horrible but I was too groggy to notice. They x-rayed my leg again and they took me to my room where I fell asleep.

I didn't dream anything; all I could see was black. I knew it was a couple of hours but it felt like a couple of minutes. I woke up and I could remember everything that happened. I could see my room, it was a small room, the window had a mural that looked like a child painted it, not the kind of room I would have preferred but it was all that was available. A TV was mounted in the corner, a small bathroom to my left, a blue chair that my mom sat in, a small table in the shape of a desk so that I can have my meals on it-, and a rather comfortable bed that adjusted my height, had a little intercom sort of thing that let me ask for assistance, and a TV remote. They wrapped some sort of cotton material around my leg, followed by a wet, blue bandage. They let it dry and I could feel a nice, warm feeling around it, it must have been the chemicals reacting to the water that they dipped it in.

They said it would take two to three months to heal due to the fact it was the slowest healing bone in the body. I was in a storm of emotions at the time, I was sad and disappointed that I couldn't walk, furious that my brother talked me into doing this, relieved that I could finally rest, and upset that I was still in pain due to the fact that the substance in my IV had gelled up. It was all so much to take in for one day, but all I wanted to do at the time was rest.

I was hungry, so they gave me a menu; I ordered some bacon and scrambled eggs with some powdered donut holes. It came in what looked like a serving dish with a plastic cover over it and I wondered where they got it. I took a nap after finishing my breakfast. I was hoping that the pain would go down with some rest.

I woke up and a while later they sent someone to teach me how to use crutches. But when I tried it was incredibly painful, I just wanted it all to end. I went back to my bed and tried to recover from the pain I had just experienced. At that moment I was more stressed than relaxed. I saw a movie "Yours, Mine, and Ours." It was a nice movie. I ordered some pepperoni pizza and some Sierra Mist. They sent it up to me in the same kind of serving plate that my breakfast was served on, I think it was Tupperware.

The trainer came back and I was afraid that I would be in pain again. She made me use a walker, the kind that I would see senior citizens use, I never thought I would use something like that, but who was I to complain. I tried it out and felt the pain go down significantly. I walked around with it a little bit and then I walked with it to the bathroom. I emptied myself and went back out. I thanked the trainer and she left.

It was quite an adventure, but with every adventure comes it's ending. Mom never left my side that day. She told me we had to leave soon, but I wanted to stay. She told me it was a thousand dollars a night just to stay there. She bribed me with a video game. I wish we had negotiated so that I could have more than just that.

The doctors got me dressed and they gave me crutches to use and they showed me to the main entrance where my dad and my brother were waiting to take me home. It took them a while to help me in, but they sat me down and we were off. Mom told Dad to stop for the video game and she got it.

We finally got home and I was confined to the downstairs area due to the fact my bedroom was upstairs. I slept on the couch where it was quite comfortable. I missed my last day of school, and my summer was ruined. But it wasn't all bad. I got to go to work with Mom quite often and I got to go to Iowa.

Finally months passed and i work alone without crutches, so i throw them away myself feeling glad and heartful but never forgot the caused of it all, my brother.

Hi @carrieallen, nice idea for a contest. The photo reminds me of the time when I saw a basket of laundry neatly placed along the side of a major road that left me scratching my head...

"Are you serious?" Sam looked me up and down. "You honestly think it'll work?"
"Would I bring crutches if I didn't? Don't even ask how I got them," I said. I knew he'd ask, so I quickly shoved them in the back seat and shut the car door. I got in the passenger seat and lit a cigarette.
"The best way to avoid suspicion is to draw attention to a particular detail," I said between puffs. Sam just drove.
"You've crazy, man," he muttered.
"Maybe," I said. "Maybe I am."

*"The local bank was apparently robbed today by a man on crutches,"* the news anchor said on the radio with an obvious tone of surprise in her voice. "It is still unclear how he was able to evade the police that arrived at the scene within just minutes!"
I was laughing like a maniac when Sam threw the crutches from the car window mid-drive, still sweating from the adrenaline rush. We were on some dead-end street in the middle of nowhere, with twenty grand in a bag under my seat, and not a single police car on our tail.

A disability that always hinder me from moving, a freedom to do what ever i want. My crowd seems like a huge lifeless land that leaves me out from the dream of fitting in. But reality struck on me, i may not be ideal but my disability wont define me. The thing that support me would not be a factor to be called ugly. I would not leave it to become perfect in their eyes. But i will use it to support me from chasing my dreams and as i stand in this vast dull land, the sun still shines giving me rays of hope that someday this land where i'm standing would be full of life and be able to be me.
