For mass adoption of any kind, it is needed that you support enormous number of people involved in the system, and regarding crypto currencies that is related to number of transactions in the system. Nevertheless, both top block-chains BTC and ETH are suffering from the same scalability issue and could support limited number of transaction in time, which is influencing bottle-necks in case of many users in the same time on the network. These scalability issues are related to full redundancy consensus mechanisms, that requires permanent storage of all data, and validation by every participant in the network.
Block-chain development is going further in many directions, but scalability issue is one of the most important for regular daily use. Second layer development is proposition that could improve number of transaction on each block-chain, even on top ones, without change to initial block-chain protocol. Cartesi is a project that is offering exactly that, it is a layer 2 platform for development and deployment of scalable decentralized applications, which is comprised from two components. First component is off the chain and serves developers, through large scale verifiable computations that can be done on Cartesi Machines, power by Linux operation system, and could be integrated in smart contracts.
Cartesi is providing developers with solution that go around traditional block-chain limitations and enable developers to use programming languages of their choice, not related to block-chain limits, so that they can select best run-time environment for their work. Project motivation is related to intensive computations that are impractical to run on a block-chain itself, but need to be verified, so Cartesi is providing off-chain infrastructure connected to block-chain that is verifying their calculations. It is a real operating system, in Linux environment, consensus is guaranteed, since all parties involved in app could verify the computations, and dispute are solved directly through Cartesi, on the block-chain, but operating power needed is rather negligible compared to computational power done off-the-chain.
It is a rather interesting project on the block-chain, different from the main wave currently progressed on decentralized exchanges and similar applications, and with high chances of success in case of proper development.
