"Just talk good things about Steem to get upvotes"

With proof-of-brain getting at least somewhat functional, there's been a fair amount of critique that most of the stake is just going towards "Steem cheerleading", if you will, instead of "actual content". _Just please the whales._ Well, there are whales who are looking for non-Steem related content. @acidyo and @theycallmedan just to name a couple. Furthermore, I've seen many non-Steem posts reaching Trending, like [this](https://steempeak.com/photography/@rubencress/visiting-plitvicka-jezera-in-croatia) and [this](https://steempeak.com/photography/@paulmp/adventures-in-antarctica), albeit Steem is the dominant topic at the moment. 

But what one should understand about Steem (yes, I'm talking about _Steem_), is that this platform, that a wide variety of users have stumbled upon, is work in progress; it's like a collective start up to create an economy around the idea of proof-of-brain and reward all those who support it. Social media actions are an aspect of it, but it can be applied to other areas such as games - Splinterlands being a good example of this. 

The critique over content being rewarded asymmetrically is a fair one, however, remember that proof-of-brain wasn't even functional just a month ago on content. The economical changes in Hard Fork 21 were just a start where Steem's end goal is to be: *a platform to provide a good user experience for wide audience*. This end goal will be closer with the arrival of Communities and Smart Media Tokens that will improve content discovery which in fact sucks ass at the moment. 

While we are yet to provide the big audience a friendly user experience, Steem-centric content is unavoidable, because Steem _is_ the platform that is used to communicate about the development of Steem. I would argue that it is actually very good that there is a lot of information available publicly - Steem is an open and transparent system after all, the development of which should not happen behind closed doors. 

Whether users like it or not, they are part of an evolving ecosystem that is still on its way to be able to support a wide variety of different communities and niches that can empower themselves. 

Though I agree that rewarding all kinds of quality content is important even at this point, because those willing to put more effort on their content on Steem are often more willing to also be owners in the ecosystem. Increasing distribution in such a manner will provide future stability for the chain in the long run. 

@curangel is one of the projects that aims to distribute stake wide in such a manner with a varied group of curators (me being one of them), so if you think rewarding underrated content is important, you can delegate to @curangel to support the cause.

I'd rather see good content that doesn't even mention steem, or crypto, or the platform (ie a soap box) in it get the most upvotes in an organic manner. 

I'm getting a bit tired of the echo-chamber talking about steem all the time in trending. 

I want to see original content there! It is a struggle.

So, with all the tribes being created for specific niches, categories and themes, there could be a tribe created for posts which subjects are related to steem. It may sound confusing, but if steemit is a place for all and too many posts about steem itself are occupying the feed... we could ask ourselves if steem enthusiasts have a tribe for their own.

I haven't checked out trending, and I noticed a lot of changes in behaviour, possibilities and opportunities. Looking forward seeing them unfold in the future.

Yeah, dude, welcome to the Trending club! Even @haejin upvoted it! He's no longer wasting his voting power on self-jerking, because he's not getting anything for it. Apparently he just threw some upvotes for all the top trending posts the other day, yours happened to be one of them. Not many can say that haejin has upvoted them 😄

I get what you're saying, but what's the token for the tribe? Steem? 😅
Steempeak has its category for Steem related news so maybe something like that could work for Steem content... I don't know, I think we'll have to wait and see how things get organized with Communities, doesn't make sense to do any big changes for content sorting now when it's going to change anyway after a short while. 

In any case, people are now actually looking at Trending and filtering its content, which is good to see.

Haha, yes, actually, I've spoken with @haejin and we could get along quite well. I feel blessed that the post was picked up by the platform, it surely made it more visible whereas I could receive valuable responses as well.

Haha, of course not. If the Steem blockchain is the catch-all for all sorts of themes and topics, the posts about Steem itself could be categorized as well and get their own topic, right? Steem rewards are inevitable as it is being posted on the Steem blockchain anyhow. However, a tribe should create a filter/extra layer of pinpointed interests where similarities can be met and could be incentivized. Any thoughts about that? Just some random bubbles popping in my head.

That's good to hear, trending being fixed. I believe it was one of the projects Eric had in mind just before I left Steemit for some time. The changes occurring on Steemit itself are quite immense and I yet have to go through them one by one.

i was just talking about this with a friend earlier, who mentioned that there are hardly any creative posts trending on steemit, unless you want to include photography - but why only one aspect of creativity? why are art, writing and music not garnering steem laden votes? 

truth is, only people who write about steem or steemit related issues tend to trend **unless** they are whales, friends with whales, or bot their post in some way. And while I have seen positive action on the part of a few good whale curators, its not so much that it can compete with a trending post that's been updooted by the likes of a bot or voting circle.

what we hear is the message that *pay to earn*, or rubbing arenas are the way to success. people make nice with the "in crowd" in hopes of getting noticed for a whale vote or patronage. 

wait, i thought that was old steem? perhaps some bits of old steem are still clinging on hoping for a replay.

my suggestion for the whale curators is, the posts are out there, waiting to be voted on. go over to C2 or Helpie. These guys have been supporting great content for quite a while. broaden your gaze.
