<h3>La programación paralela y el diseño de programas paralelos eficientes están bien establecidos en la computación científica de alto rendimiento desde hace muchos años. La simulación de problemas científicos es un área importante en las ciencias naturales y de la ingeniería de creciente importancia. Las simulaciones más precisas o la simulación de problemas de mayor envergadura necesitan una potencia de cálculo y un espacio de memoria cada vez mayores.</h3>

<p>Algunos ejemplos populares son las simulaciones de previsiones meteorológicas basadas en complejos modelos matemáticos con ecuaciones diferenciales parciales o las simulaciones de accidentes de la industria automovilística basadas en métodos de elementos finitos.</p>

<p>Un ejemplo típico del primer ámbito de aplicación es la previsión meteorológica, en la que hay que predecir la evolución futura de la atmósfera, lo que sólo puede obtenerse mediante simulaciones.</p>

<p>En el segundo ámbito de aplicación, las simulaciones por ordenador se utilizan para obtener resultados más precisos que los de los experimentos prácticos o que pueden realizarse con menos esfuerzo económico.</p>
