###
There appears to have been an acrimonious falling out between the founders of MyEtherWallet (MEW). Earlier today, co-founder Taylor Monahan, announced the launch of MyCrypto, a MyEtherWallet hard fork that caught everyone by surprise. This news comes with absolutely no warning and has caused much concern and consternation amongst users of the popular Ethereum online wallet interface.

###
According to Taylor Monahan's [Medium post](https://medium.com/@MyCrypto/mycrypto-what-you-need-to-know-ee6e45c24313), the entire MyEtherWallet team has left the project and is now working on MyCrypto. This leaves co-founder *kvhnuke* to manage and maintain MyEtherWallet by his lonesome self. The twitter account used by MEW has also been commandeered by Taylor Monahan for the new project. Not surprisingly, this has resulted in the mistaken belief that [MEW had merely undergone a rebranding](https://mybroadband.co.za/news/cryptocurrency/248248-myetherwallet-rebrands-to-mycrypto.html).

###
A whole lot of speculation has gone into the reasons for the split and I believe they can be found in Taylor Monahan's [original post](https://medium.com/mycrypto/mycrypto-launch-6a066bf41093) in which she alludes to a difference in opinion between the 2 founders.

###
While MEW initially started as a side project for the two, Taylor had become increasingly committed to the growth of the project. After a lacklustre 2015 in which she only made 51 contributions to her partner's 71, she quickly surpassed *kvhnuke* in 2016, making nearly 3 times more contributions to the MEW codebase than her co-founder. Last year, Taylor made a staggering 2,184 contributions while *kvhnuke* logged a mere 465 contributions.

###
So what does the future hold for MyEtherWallet and MyCrypto? Right now, it is anyone's guess. The fate of MEW rests solely on *kvhnuke's* shoulders. How he recovers from the startling betrayal of his team and long time partner would go a long way towards showing the Ethereum community his mettle or lack thereof.

###
As for MyCrypto, starting afresh is never easy, even on a somewhat familiar codebase. On top of that, they would need to regain the trust of the community and win over those who might felt affronted by the team's decision to walk out on the project without so much as a by your leave.
