There aren't many rules with the Hash House Harriers and one of our statements that are made on a regular basis is that "there are no rules, only traditions" and this is very true for the most part.  However, there are a few things that will not be tolerated at the Hash anywhere in the world that I am aware of and that is the endangerment of your or other people's lives by way of drinking and driving.  

We are "drinkers with a running problem" and at all of our events the highlight is the end of the runs where we sit around and drink beer... a lot of it.  A vast majority of the participants would be considered legally drunk by the time we are finished and a lot of us take an additional beer for the road as we are leaving.  But we leave, as a team, on a bus with drivers that we hired specifically to take us to and from these thrice weekly events.

On some days we have so many people that we have to hire multiple buses and that pickup truck you see on the left in the pic above is what is considered a bus here in Thailand.  It is merely a pickup truck that has been lowered and outfitted with chairs in the back.  We can seat 10 people comfortably in there and up to 12 uncomfortably.  On one particular massive event that involved the inviting of multiple other Hashes to our event we had 15 of these buses hired.

No one messes around with the "no drink driving rule" and even though a few people decide to attend the events in their own vehicles, it is expected of them that they are allowed only 1 beer during the "party" that we have at the end of each run.  It is strongly encouraged that they don't even have that and for the most part, the people that do bring their own vehicles either have a designated driver or do not drink that day at all.

This is an absolutely critical part of our operation because all it takes is for one of us to get into an drunken accident somewhere in the world and not only does the potential injury / loss of life during that one incident really suck but it could have a lasting impact on the good name of our organization worldwide.  There are over 2000 Hash clubs / kennels / chapters around the world and as far as I know, none of them will tolerate drink driving.

There is nothing wrong with getting drunk and trust me, we do plenty of that but getting into a vehicle and then falling asleep at the wheel?  Well, we never want to see that happen.

At first glance the Hash House Harriers seems like a group of party boys and girls that don't take life too seriously and for the most part this notion is very correct.  However, we are still all mostly adults despite the fact that we refuse to grow up we do not and will not ever tolerate drunk driving.  This is a misconception about the Hash in many places and I just want everyone to know that despite our silly exterior there are a few things we take very seriously and this is one of the main ones.
