第一次看土耳其文学，没有明显的文化隔阂感。
作品以从村子里到城市伊斯坦布尔卖酸奶和钵扎的麦夫鲁特为主人公，展现了他以外来人的身份在城市里生活四十年的人生经历。在社会变革的推动下，麦夫鲁特感受到了生活的被动变迁，堂兄弟一家齐心协力团聚的生活在一起，让他艳羡不已。尽管如此，他却看不上别人为了追求生活的富足而逐渐变坏的人性。他虽然不曾发家致富，虽然因为贫困不能把村里的家人们接来一起生活，但他忠于自己的内心，实践着美好的德行，诚实、踏实、任劳任怨、毫无害人之心、从不利己损人。
感情方面，他因为在婚礼上曾经四目相对的一刹那留在记忆中的激情，而持续、热烈、浓情蜜意的写了三年情书追求意中人，却因为堂弟私心把她留给自己而被告知了错误的名字。私奔时发现来者并不是意中人的苦恼，被对方难过的哭泣而驱散，取而代之是心疼和认命。这种善良带给他们幸福的十多年生活。然而妻子不幸堕胎殒命，几年后阴错阳差的他最终和意中人结合到一起，却并没有享受到预想的亲近和幸福。既因为两个人之间的爱达不到契合的程度，也因为情书和对前妻的怀念、愧疚而产生的隔阂。
这个贫困却内心富足、坚持着自己生活认知、实践着传统生活模式的小贩，令人肃然起敬～如一股清流，为众人追求利益最大化而不择手段的现实生活，提供了另一条出路。
