#### ***Graphic design to promote the preservation of these wonderful marine mammals***.
##### IT'S FUNNY HOW THINGS WORK OUT. LONG BEFORE I MADE THE CONSCIOUS DECISION TO DIVE INTO THE VAST OCEAN THAT IS #HIVE, I'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT *"WHALES "*. LOGICALLY, UPON HEARING THIS WORD FOR THE FIRST TIME, ONE CAN'T AVOID TO THINK OF THE GREAT CETACEANS THAT PLY OUR SEAS.

On second thought, however, I think the creators of this incredible collaborative effort were remarkably accurate in their analogy in recreating such a digital environment with the terminology of marine life. Like their aquatic counterpart, the *whales* in HIVE are the larger figures, but not in the visual sense but rather in terms of voting power —*Hive Power*— so it is the *whales* who can greatly reward the *hivers* who post with the most originality, professionalism and ingenuity.
During these last three days, after having made my presentation, I wanted to post something that was truly transcendent and based on the above, I recalled a trip I made several years ago where I was able to see whales up close in their habitat. There I also learned about their way of life and about the indiscriminate hunting they were subjected to until their near extinction during the previous two centuries. Currently there is a moratorium that prohibits the hunting of these aquatic mammals in international waters, but unfortunately there are still some countries that continue to hunt them in their national waters.

There are several organizations dedicated to the conservation of the environment and the defense of endangered animals, but for these organizations to function they need the support of thousands of volunteers who promote the spirit of this mission. Which inspired me to do my bit and so I sat down in front of my computer and designed the following graphic with the message "LET'S SAVE THE WHALES".

#### CREATION PROCESS

*First I made a vector line drawing of a blue whale.*
*Then I filled in the parts of the whale with blue tones.*
*I did a search of the possible fonts that I would use in the graphics. I liked the Monoton typeface because it resembles the striped belly of blue and humpback whales. For the upper part I used Insaniburger with cheese because of its thick, modern and legible shape.*
*The following step shows the process of deformation of the words to adapt them to the body of our whale in a graphic style.*
*Afterwards I drew the jet of water coming out of the whale's winnowers and played with various color palettes. Initially with the bluish-gray tones typical of these animals.*
*Then I updated the fins by dividing them into several sectors to give them color. The following is a more pop version in bright colors that evoke the Hippie Movement of the '60s.*
*In the end I opted for a palette between blues and greens that are often used by the environmentalist and conservationist movement.*

#### **GRAPHISM CONCEPT**
I conceived LET'S SAVE THE WHALES as a graphic that promotes collective awareness of the duty we have to protect our animals, our environment and our natural resources. Also, in the interest of having a real impact, the use of this graphic is royalty free so that anyone can use it. It can be printed on different marketing pieces such as t-shirts, mugs, caps or for application in any digital media.

##### ES CURIOSO CÓMO SE DAN LAS COSAS. DESDE MUCHO ANTES DE TOMAR LA DECISIÓN CONSCIENTE DE SUMERGIRME EN ESTE INMENSO OCÉANO QUE ES #HIVE, HE VENIDO ESCUCHANDO SOBRE LAS *"BALLENAS"*. LÓGICAMENTE AL ESCUCHAR ESTA PALABRA POR PRIMERA VEZ UNO NO PUEDE EVITAR PENSAR EN LOS GRANDES CETÁCEOS QUE SURCAN NUESTROS MARES.

Sin embargo, pensándolo bien, creo que los creadores de este increíble esfuerzo mancomunado fueron extraordinariamente certeros en cuanto a su analogía al recrear un ambiente digital como este con la terminología propia de la vida marina. Al igual que su contraparte acuática, las *ballenas* en HIVE son las figuras más grandes, pero no en el sentido visual sino más bien en términos de poder de voto —*Hive Power*— de modo que son las *ballenas* quienes pueden recompensar grandemente a los *hivers* que publiquen con mayor originalidad, profesionalismo e ingenio.
Durante estos últimos tres días, después de haber realizado mi presentación, he querido publicar algo que fuera realmente trascendente y tomando como base lo anterior, recordé un viaje que hice hace varios años donde pude ver de cerca las ballenas en su hábitat. Allí también aprendí acerca de su forma de vida y sobre la cacería indiscriminada de la que fueron objeto hasta casi su extinción durante los dos siglos anteriores. Actualmente existe una moratoria que prohíbe la caza de estos mamíferos acuáticos en aguas internacionales, pero lamentablemente aun existen algunos países que continúan cazándolas en sus aguas nacionales.

Hay varios organismos que se dedican a la conservación del medio ambiente y de la defensa de los animales en peligro de extinción, pero para que estos organismos funcionen necesitan el apoyo de miles de voluntarios que promuevan el espíritu de esta misión. Lo que me inspiró en aportar mi granito de arena y por eso me senté frente a mi computadora y diseñé el siguiente grafismo con el mensaje “LET'S SAVE THE WHALES”.

#### PROCESO DE CREACIÓN

*Primero realicé un dibujo lineal en vectores de una ballena azul.*
*Luego rellené las partes de la ballena con tonos azulados.*
*Hice una búsqueda de las posibles tipografías que usaría en el grafismo. Me gustó la tipografía Monoton por que asemeja a la panza rayada de las ballenas azules y jorobadas. Para la parte superior usé Insaniburguer with cheese por su forma gruesa, moderna y legible.*
*El siguiente paso muestra el proceso de deformación de las palabras para adaptarlas al cuerpo de nuestra ballena en un estilo gráfico.*
*Posteriormente dibujé el chorro de agua que sale por los aventadores de las ballenas y jugué con varias paletas de colores. Inicialmente con los tonos gris-azulados propios de estos animales.*
*Luego actualicé las aletas dividiéndolas en varios sectores para darles color. La que sigue es una versión más pop en colores vivos que nos evocan el Movimiento Hippie de los ´60.*
*Al final decanté por una paleta entre azules y verdes que son con frecuencia los usados por la corriente ambientalista y conservacionista.*

#### **CONCEPTO DEL GRAFISMO**
Concebí LET'S SAVE THE WHALES como un grafismo que fomente la conciencia colectiva del deber que tenemos en proteger nuestros animales, nuestro medio ambiente y nuestros recursos naturales. Así mismo y con el interés de que tenga un verdadero impacto, el uso de este grafismo está libre de derechos de autor para que cualquiera lo pueda usar. Puede ser impreso en distintas piezas de marketing como franelas, tazas, gorras o para la aplicación en cualquier medio digital.

###### Del mismo modo invito a cuidar y respetar nuestras *ballenas* en Hive y a celebrar porque sean prósperas y se multipliquen rápidamente. Yo sé que apenas soy un simple pez, pero espero ser algún día una imponente ballena como las que nadan por aquí. ¿Qué piensan ustedes?
