Yesterday night as I was lurking trough steemitΒ΄s "Created" list I found a young steemit star on the rise, her name is @stellabelle and her first 2 posts seemed quite interesting, because she was new to the platform she did not have a lot of upvotes but I was sure that once people read them they would go straight to the "hot" list. So, I did the steemian thing to do and up-voted them both! This morning her two posts account for almost 5k SMD and I can imagine I will be getting a cut out of that, and all I can think of is: "I beat the bots! I beat the bots!.. woohoooo" Jokes aside, I wanted to share this experience as an example of why bots dont really matter, steemit is growing at an incredible pace and there is only a few up-voting bots out there, if you stay on the created list and find good content before everyone else you will get rewarded for it.. period! And yes if you power up you will get better rewards but like any investment you would expect a return in some form, for whales that powered up the return comes in the form of curation rewards and that is fine, its actually normal and should be expected, otherwise why would people even bother buying steem to power up? Well this was my message in response to the anti-bot propaganda and because I am in a good mood I will finish this post with a dancing Carlton gif. #steemit #bots

Fully agree. The only issue I have is witnesses running bots, because I see a potential conflict of interest.

I agree with you on this as far as not using the witness stakes to vote with bots. But even if there were a rule against it, they could still use personal accounts for bots and no one would necessarily know. The alternative perspective is that witnesses have committed to this system and have just as much right as anyone else to use the tools at their (at everyone's) disposal to make a living.

No, rules don't make sense. I think that witnesses get paid extraordinarily good to run the blockchain, and that should reflect in their behavior on it voluntarily. For being voted in I decided that the primary focus for everything I do here should be to make the usage of the platform as enjoyable as possible for others. My personal profit through site usage is secondary (not completely avoided - i still vote for some of my own posts and stuff like that), I get a good share in other ways. For the platform, it's not necessary that a big holder votes as much as possible, because that just dilutes the power of small users. If they do, imo their votes should be cast manually, like it's done by most, over a vast spectrum of posts _and good replies_ so that all of those get a smaller share of the big whale's pie. The only big holders I see having some kind of responsibility to help with that are witnesses, but for them it doesn't depend on if it's the mined or witnessed portion of the stake. You could generally say that I have the same expectations on witnesses than on the steemit team when it comes to managing their on-site behavior. Just my personal opinion though, nothing that can or should be enforced!

Hey, this really made my day! As a total newcomer, I'm just learning the workings of this site, but so far, it's exactly what I've been looking for. I might do an experiment and release my books on here before anywhere else. The fact that you could see me as a 'rising star' in one day is unbelievable. I looked into Tsu when it came out, but it didn't hold my attention like this site. Cool.
