*rant start*

I see a lot of people stressing about getting lots of votes but not much rewards, it is quite frankly becoming a bit annoying to me. Somehow some users feel they know which posts should be getting rewards and which shouldn’t. I have read absurd comments like:

> How did this meme get 800 bucks!

Or 

> Throwing balloons into the sea gets you thousands but my post only gets cents

Etc, etc etc… I see at least 10 of these bitching posts per day and I have even read people talking about quitting steemit!

To me it all comes down to one very natural but ugly human feeling: **envy** , it is a feeling we all have at times but it is a feeling you must fight and at the very least you should not let it out and tell everyone how jealous you are of other bloggers. 

Bottom line is all steemians; Whales, Dolphins or Minnows will vote on whatever the hell they want and judging other people votes it’s not only stupid but also irrational, it’s basically saying that your way of thinking is the way everybody should think!

Remember just weeks ago when you spent hours at Medium and Reddit and you got nothing to show for it?... yeah that’s right you were happy blogging then, but somehow now you feel you deserve thousends!? Come on!!

So, I want to finish this post on a rather happier note and give a sincere recommendation to everyone out there who is either feeling frustrated, angry or even abandoned by whales and dolphins:

## “If you are getting votes, that is all that matters,  it means that people like your posts and eventually a whale will like it too and vote for it. Just don’t stress and whine because that really won’t get you any love from anyone. Be yourself and write stuff you like because at the end of the day it is your blog”

I've been making some posts with all original content from myself and has won just cents.. but I'm having fun doin' it.. I hope, someday i'll be rewarded for that! but until then, i'll just enjoy this community for what it is and not for what my greed and envy wants it to be!.

Sometimes we want something so much, that our greedy energy push it away...  Envy is one of the most dangerous energies and life is very ironic when it comes to rewards.

I have to say, with me being brand new here I am still learning my way around and learning how to post pictures properly as well. That being said there does seem to be a lot of interesting stuff on here. I have started my first blog ever about my retirement plans in Mexico. The reason that I decided to come here to do it was not so I can make some form of fictional money, (i have yet to grasp the financial benefit here), but rather to not get lost in a sea of millions and millions of other people that have been using fors such as Reddit for a long time. I am excited to share my thoughts and ideas and to get input from people all around the world and I felt this might be a good place to garner that input.

like everything in life, if you see someone else succeed or win or whatever, we've been conditioned through the media to automatically think "me wantee!"...  

personally I enjoy reading a lot of the content on here that doesn't necessarily get the mega upvotes & $$$.. But I'm still thankful to the person that put in the effort to share their story or photos or whatever.. 

in the end, hopefully, the decent, original posts will shine though.

Interesting to watch early seedlings grow like this. You can almost pick out the type of people that would end up going down the path of 'tyranny' about what should be upvoted and what shouldn't be to make it "more fair". 

Coercing the behavior of others to behave "better" is the sort of silly shit we're trying to escape. 

Some people just can't help but let their inner dictator channel through :)

It's all relative. If success on a platform was based on karma points, then that is what people would aim for. Here it is based on dollars, so that is what they aim for.

Would you be taking the same attitude if you weren't on a upvote bot-list? Here is a challenge for you - make a brand new account and spend a week  trying to post without your legacy upvote support system. Then report back honesty whether you enjoyed it as much as you do with your "chitty" account.

Nope, not envy more like frustration. I think every whale deserves his money and fame, but something needs to happen so that whales don't manipulate what WE see, and what they like is about steem instead of other minority topics completely unrelated.

Also what if whales who have over 1000sp just don't vote or better yet are limited to one vote per week? that would mean that the minnows can swim freely and smash that upvote with vigor because now they are the new whales.

Think on it.

I have commented on this topic EXTENSIVELY, and have nothing to show for it. You will get absolutely no reward of upvotes from whales and no responses from whales other than to say, "You're just a complainer". Which only serves to alienate those that have a different viewpoint. Money buys speech here, it's obvious. 

And it is absolutely not about envy. That is the excuse those that have power or want power use to make it seem like those that don't agree with them are not worth listening to.

This community could be so much better, but the desire to hit critical mass ASAP and keep the platform alive literally censors free speech right in front of our faces. There is NO incentive whatsoever to say something that users perceive will harm their chances at making a lot of money.

Could someone that either writes better, thinks better, or is better than I am pick up the torch and get this message out? I'm seriously beyond frustrated trying to get people to hear this message.

Yes! Free speech. We Krills cannot contribute in our own little way so to speak because anything that isn't status quo ain't so pretty. Steem power is so directly linked to user contribution that is the problem, unless everyone who reads your post upvotes it or a whale does magic on it you won't get attention, which means no replies (the real value imo) therefore no debate or discussion.

It kinda sucks, and the only way for change is for everyone to start demanding it.

I am new to steemit so this might be not quite right but imo writing a post with an aspiration to just make money of it is already wrong. Just be yourself, share your impression with community and have fun. If you are posting/reposting interesting or usefull content you`ll get your rewards sooner or later. Peace.

The 80% of the members only have 0.17% voting power here, the whales are developers, they don't have enough time to read every post and vote the good ones. It's the early stage for steem, as time goes by, more people will undestand cryptocurrency and have faith for it  and will buy.

Well, I am also tired of all this complaining. But truth being ... if too many people complain Steemit will fail. The whitepaper is aware of that. If people get a sense of being treated unfair, they will go away. And in some part I can understand some people's frustration. Sometimes you are making a nice post working days on it that is very bad rewarded. Than some girl posts an introduction with 2 pictures of her and she suddenly gets rewarded with $10.000. I understand many people think this is unfair.

Once you stop the free money, they are out of here. Yet when a whale votes on posts that support their interests, and never votes on things that don't serve their interests they are *forcing* their will on what people should be able to say.

I've commented on this topic extensively. It is not all about envy. 

In a recent thread about plagiarism, every comment that didn't support the OP and the idea of being able to copy and paste other sites photographs, under the pretext that sharing is ok until the original owner somehow discovers their content has been "shared", earned practically nothing.


On the flipside, a number of comments that came to the support of the OP were handsomely rewarded by whales and others.

While one might be able to say that the comments in support of the OP were wonderful comments and deserved to be rewarded based on the quality of their message, the reality is that rewarding comments that you like, when you're a whale, reinforce what others are willing or not willing to say.

So imagine this scenario. I'm a whale and I feel I'm being attacked. Comments that support me, I can upvote and possibly get other whales and dolphins to upvote. All comments that don't support me, I won't upvote. (Which is natural human behavior, don't get me wrong.) 

But unless some adventurous whale bucks the trend and upvotes messages of those that have a different valid viewpoint, there won't be interest to ever be critical of others. This is bad for everyone. Sycophantic (sucking up) behavior is not good for a community. 

There must be some way to make whales aware of their weight when it comes to affecting free speech. Currently there is an extreme chilling effect where views constructively critical of Steemit.com/Users/Content are marginalized while comments about the potential and hyping the platform/Users is incentivized.

It's an uneven playing field, plain and simple. 

If you say something whales and wannabe whales already want to hear, you can get rewarded. If you say something whales and wannabe whales don't want to hear, you get no reward and ostracized. 

There is no way for dissenting views to ever make it to the point of becoming a dolphin let alone a whale if this continues. Everyone here will be a yes-man trying to survive off the crumbs whales leave for them. 

Someone please show me even one article constructively critical of this platform that has ever made any significant money. I've seen hundreds singing the praises on the top of trending and hundreds more trying to get to trending. It just doesn't make any sense that there are so few articles of high quality that criticize the inequity of the system as it stands currently, unless there is something keeping them at bay.

Please, before you jump down my throat, take a deep breath and think about what I and others have been saying. Good ideas should be able to stand up to criticism and still survive. It serves to improve the idea through a tempering process. If there is something that can't stand up to scrutiny, it can then be altered or discarded. Don't be afraid of hearing dissenting views and even giving an upvote when someone says something you may not agree with, but has some good points. Otherwise this place will not be nearly as vibrant and interesting as it otherwise could.

Not expecting them nor wanting them to do what I want. I would like for them, and others, to notice this phenomenon, and at least acknowledge the "envious whiners" like me with some sort of cogent rebuttal for everyone's sake. All I've seen, for the most part, is name-calling and straw man arguments like, "Just be rich and throw your life savings into Steem so you will have the right to complain". 

This sort of dismissal of the complaints and observations of the users of Steemit.com only serves to drive away what could be useful members of the community. After all this is in beta and one would typically think this is a time for the users to beta test and offer their opinions without getting jumped on.

I do not agree with you. I think that **constructive** criticism has always been listened to, and acted upon when it had merit. 

But to expect the "whales" who have put their blood, sweat, and treasure in to creating this opportunity to now give equal voting power to newly arrived individuals who have practically no skin in the game and can jump ship at any moment with little loss - well you're dreaming.

Who has more incentive to make the system grow than the whales?

I must be daft. Because very few people that respond to my posts understand what I'm trying to say and/or take out some point and twist it to fit what they want to say.

Nobody is suggesting newbs should be equal to whales or anything remotely close to that. Nowhere will you find a sensible comment saying that. Just because someone says "it's an uneven playing field" doesn't automatically mean the solution to the real problem should be fixed by making the field perfectly even. My statement there was a summery  of the previous paragraphs where the unevenness is not even between the whales and the minnows, but between the whales support of positive group-think and how this imbalances the system. All the whales, for the most part, think along these lines of "The posts must have positive value for Steemit.com" or they won't get my vote.


I'm not saying that my opinions are special and deserve any more weight than another. I'm saying that the opinions of anyone and everyone should have the possibility of being heard if they have merit, even if they are unpopular views that make the platform look bad. If it's true, or at least well thought out and supported, and time and effort put in to it, there should be someone willing to give it an upvote. But there is a very strong bias against anything that might remove value from the platform.

I understand now that the system is this way it is and that behind the scenes the type of concerns I bring up on Steemit.com are not new outside of Steemit.com. Consequently I talk with others about these issues in rocket.chat or elsewhere instead of on the blockchain. There is no reason anyone should say anything that goes against the flow, because you won't be heard and you won't be rewarded. 

Please pardon my lack of editing of these paragraphs - felt like you deserved a response - but I'm very tired. Hope my intentions are clear enough.

So become a whale and vote your way. They are whales because they have earned it. Why should they use their investment to prop up whiny, little, sniveling shits that are bad mouthing their hard work or investment. There is plenty of Steem out there for you to buy up and become the egalitarian whale you want to force them to be. Stop whining and just do it. (and before you make up some excuse, since you seem to think there are so many of you, do some crowdfunding and turn one of your accounts into the whale account and you can all get together and cast votes on what content you wish to upvote.)
Whining about an uneven playing field is being passive aggressive. You are the one trying to force your opinion on others. Stop trying to shame the whales into what you want. The reason that there are so few article of high quality that criticize the inequity of the system as it currently stands may be because people like the way the system is as it currently stands and don't feel that there is an inequity. As I stated, you have every opportunity that everyone else has to become a whale here and a couple of different paths to get there. Choose one and get on with it; become a whale and upvote all the high quality articles that criticize the system. You could also create a side chain app where all is whatever you consider "equal" or a steem clone. The choice is yours. Get on with it.

I made my Steemstack© off of being critical of this platform from May-June. Many of my complaints have changed the platform, once they became someone else's complaints. Many of my ideas have become a reality, once they became someone else's ideas. ;)

I don't care who was given the reward later or how much they made rehashing something I'd said months earlier (though it does sting at times), so long as someone finally listened and fixed the problem or implemented the idea. We all benefit in the long run.

Point being, even though you may not see criticism being rewarded, it's out there as a planted seed and it will ferment and grow in the minds of others. Then one day it will suddenly sound like a great idea to most everyone ... when someone else regurgitates the seed you planted. And even though they will be given all of the credit, you can always point back to the blockchain where you said it first ... and in the long run, you still benefit from the problem being fixed or the idea being implemented. ;)

I appreciate your reply. And I can get behind that sentiment to a great degree. My point, however, with my statement of "Show me a big reward for critical articles" was to point out that it's 1:100 the number of critical articles to fluff or non-controversial articles that in any way might make the platform look bad.

This is not reasonable to expect, considering this is in beta, that there would not be problems worth voicing and that others wouldn't agree with. The reasons why they are not made and promoted is because anyone that has tried has failed to see reward for their effort, and because others never see any reward for that sort of post, they don't bother. 

I really appreciate you replying with a reasonable and civil answer to my question even though it didn't exactly answer my question! See you in rocketchat, because I've given up trying to say anything in the outside world of Steemit.com and I'm sure you will see others like me follow suit, unless they are gluttons for punishment, enjoy loneliness, or sell out.

I completely agree @chitty, for example I was never into writing and this project has started to give me a big interest for this type of things. There's nothing better than doing something you develop a passion for and to be honest all I've been doing is reading and researching on how to become a better writer and blogger just because is a personal need I want to satisfy instead of worrying if I'm going to catch the big fish.

People need to stop with the bitching and whining and get to writing because I know that a lot of people out there like me are here to learn from the experienced ones but 90% of the users want to be a part of the result without going through the process!

I agree. I used to post my drawings for free on Instagram (usually getting 1000++ likes that are basically without any real value), so why not post it on steemit as well - if I'm lucky I'll make some bucks, if not I haven't lost anything by posting. What we have here is a winwin situation, a great opportunity. 100% agree. And i think  that not only posts becomes soulless, with only one point- get votes, but voting too. It looks like most of users try to vote only for top posts, which allready got the money or try to find new post and to predict his upsurge (to get % like curators).

I liked the lottery comparison a lot which i read already several times, that\` s exactly like i see crypto. 
Like a saving account with build in lottery.
Honestly i\` m happy about all the people getting money, that\`s awesome when you all get rich because then the chances for some small crumbs for me aren\` t that bad. :D 
Even when i\` m only paid cents for posting my photos here on steemit, on all other networks i got nothing. 
Steemit is such an exciting place even when it sometimes seems unfair, but who cares. Was the world ever fair ? No, and it would be naive to expect fairness here.
It\` s everywhere the same in my experience. If you offer something with value you will be rewarded somewhen. Sometimes you just have to be more patient.

Just work on developing a following.  The early adopters who are currently "minnows" are going to eventually become  "dolphins" whose votes will be worth MUCH more in a few months.  Today's "dolphins" will be tomorrows "whales".  The early adopters are going to start accumulating some large amounts of Steem Power very quickly who will have much more voting power.  Everyone just needs to be patient.   There are going to be a lot more "dolphins" and "whales" on this platform in the not-to-distant future.

I can appreciate your point!  The idea that people were doing this for free earlier on other platforms is well taken. 

However, <a href="https://steemit.com/steem/@wry/a-concise-explanation-of-steem-steem-power-and-steem-dollars-how-to-obtain-and-uses">some posts aimed at newbies</a> will generally not get a lot of steem reward even if they get votes.  Also, call it envy, but it's mildly annoying to see someone like @wang, who's never made a blog post, have over a million worth of steem for (mostly?) botting.  I get that's the deal, he got here early and made the bot, but you have to acknowledge that it casts some doubt in new users minds about what is being rewarded on steemit.

I agree with @cryptobarry no reason to get upset, just enjoy, but extrinsic rewards often drive out intrinsic ones, so while I can understand the envy, I  agree the two of you are on the right track.
