a thought for you...Religion is man seeking the approbation of God.
Christianity is a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
Man seeks to be good
God is the absolute Good theefore man needs God in order to be good.
Man is too weak to be either good or evil, therefore only under a greater power can he be either good or evil.
Under Satan's power to be evil or under God's to be good.

Good and evil were here before we came and they will be here after we leave.
You cannot change evil, however evil can change you.

Rule by force is the problem.
As long as we accept that it is ok to bully some people we will always be ruled by the biggest bully on the block.

You mention both religion and labels... not all theologians are cut from the same cloth, Kierkegaard was given to say that if you label me you negate me. Not everyone is tied to a prototype or are subject to the same cannons of morality.

The good people are those who have never had to take a very hard decision...

Our culture does a lot to instill our sense of what is right. That may be from religion, government or just our parents. Even if society broke down and we had to scavenge to survive a lot of us would still find it hard to break those rules, e.g. by killing another person. People who don't have those moral boundaries tend to be declared psychotic, but if you had been 'raised by wolves/chips/whatever' would you act 'human'?

There are lots of cases where the rules broke down in certain groups of people, but I don't think those are common.

I'm no philosopher and am not religious. I still think most people would do good unless driven to extreme need.
