Staring at an open dead body on a metal table will instantly make you realize just how petty all the bullshit is that everybody complains about on a daily basis.

For as long as I live I will never forget that day last summer when I applied for a job at the Morgue. A friend of mine who worked for the agency gave me a heads up about a few openings in the Evidence Collection department. I was desperate to leave my dead end job at the time and this was a legit city job so I was all in.

My girlfriend at the time thought I was completely demented. We had been together for only a few months and when I told her I scored an interview, the look on her face made me feel weird, to say the least, almost as if she said to herself “I have no idea who this guy really is.”

After making it through the second round of interviews I was granted a final interview where the woman on the phone said “your last interview will be in a group where you will have to watch a full autopsy, are you ok with that?” Of course I was. The bump in pay from the current job where I was at would have been around $12,000 more a year. No way would I refuse that.

A week later, there I was, sitting in the lobby with about 8 other candidates waiting for the head of the department to come down and give us our final grand tour.

Two men in their mid to late 30’s come down and tell us that we’ll all be heading to the Mortuary about two blocks away and to stay together so that nobody from the group gets lost. Easy enough.

A ten minute walk through the sweltering heat and we finally make it just outside of the actual morgue garage.

Now, nothing can prepare you for the smell that invades the inner linings of your nostrils and at this point we are only at the first door, still on the street not even inside the building yet. That was just the first smell. There are three very distinct odors each one worse as we enter the actual mortuary and freezers.

As we all walk through the garage area where the bodies are wheeled in on rolling tables in body bags, we finally make it to the second door that leads from the garage into the actual hallway area inside the building.

Body after body, all in white body bags lined up against the hallway walls. At this point there is a sanitized deathly odor that cannot be explained in words. Some of the decomposed arms and feet are sticking out from the bags as we have to squeeze our way through this hallway area to finally reach the Moratorium doors. Every single person in the group is absolutely disgusted, their faces cringing.

One of the men hands us surgical masks and tells us to not touch anything. He continues on about how blood borne diseases can still live inside of corpses and we wouldn’t want to be affected by this and to take every precaution seriously before and after entering the moratorium.

Both men swing the doors open and we are greeted by about 4 bodies, all laying naked on metal slabs. They were all men of different ages and all recently deceased within the past 24 hours. There were a few employees and pathologists, if that’s the correct term, chatting and going about their day normally while the entire group I was in stood standing in shock. Three people ended up leaving the group immediately and were escorted out swiftly.

The men warned us again that if this was too much for us, leave at this moment because from that point on they would be conducting the full autopsy and this could be unsettling for us. Through my sweating and frazzled nerves I chose to stay put and not take my eyes off what I was about to witness.

The guy they decided to perform the autopsy on couldn’t have been any older than me, maybe my age, 30. He had died that morning from a hit to the head. As his body lay there I couldn’t help but to get lost in what his world was like before that fateful morning. He was young, a good looking kid. He most likely came from a very good family, probably had plenty friends, girlfriend, a life full of promise. Just like me. Yet there he was laying on that metal table completely lifeless. Nothing.

As the doctors began cutting open this kid’s body, I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. Nothing can prepare you for this I don’t care how many horror movies, youtube videos or liveleak videos you have seen. When you experience something like this in person it changes you. The doctors and multiple law enforcement agencies who deal with death on a daily basis might laugh at how I describe this horrid experience but they all know there was a first time for them also.

Again, I must mention the smell that penetrates you when the body is opened up and all of the organs are being pulled out to be checked and weighed. The sound of the rib cage being cracked and cut open. The blood pouring out of the noise, or purge as I later found out. The moment they make an incision on the back of the neck from ear to ear and pull the skin over past the front of the forehead. The sound and burning smell of the buzz saw when they cut the skullcap off to finally scooping the brain out.

Guys, my description here will never match being a witness to such thing. As I am writing this it‘s freaking me the fuck out as the smell can never be forgotten and somehow it always is present to me whenever I think about it and now that I’m writing about it I have to stop.

I salute the doctors, all law enforcement and anybody who has to deal with death regularly, you are brave and may god bless each and every one of you.

I apologize if this post offends anybody.

Life is short, be happy, be thankful and always say I love you to those you truly love.

I can't imagine the experience. Wow...that was a mind-bender. Isn't it fascinating how fragile life is? How when we are alive we are so much more than a bunch of flesh? But somehow when it all stop..."something" is gone, never to come back.

I'll tell you man, it really puts things into perspective and just like you said when we're alive we are so much more than just a bunch of flesh but when I was in there it struck me how when we pass, that's all we really are is just a bunch of flesh. very real and scary.

Wow, @chriscrypto. Stuff you kind of always wonder about but are not sure how to find out. But you were privy to something I could never watch in 1000 years. I see everything by your descriptions - and hear it too. Some people are better cut out to do this kind of work than others. Stomachs and nerves of steel.

Yeah I couldn't believe the people cutting up the body LIKE NOTHING, just another day at work, carrying normal conversations, literally blew my mind, all young folks too mid to late twenties except for the main pathologist. Scary stuff.

Yes it's the smell that gets you. It's the smell of death and decay and you never get used to it fully. It can also put you off eating meat for a while the first time you smell it.

yeah man the smell stuck to my clothes for a few hours, and yup rotting meat is the best straightforward way to describe it. maybe even worse than that.

There is one worse thing and it's related and that is malaena - partially digested blood passed in the stools people with bleeding GI ulcers get it. The smell is rank and seems to travel even further than the death smell. Also formaldehyde is quite bad. It's not sickening in the same way but it does make you feel ill and it gets in your clothes in a way that even washing doesn't seem to remove.
