I have a sense of wonder where the minds of the comatose people go. Are they lost in the 'limbo' as the supernaturalists say? Are they stuck in a dream loop? Or is it just completely blank, dark, nothing? ## Martin Pistorius Martin is the subject of the book Ghost Boy, detailing his experiences in the 12 years of coma he had. His condition was called a Locked-in Syndrome, where he was conscious of his surroundings and can sense, but he couldn't react nor move. So his mind was alive, but his body wasn't, essentially. He started losing muscle control when he was 12 and was comatose when he was 15, then started regaining consciousness a year after. His parents didn't give up on him, although at one time, his mother wept in front of him and told him "she hoped he died". He also accounted the sexual abuse he experienced from his caregivers. I was once in a coma for 5 weeks. Was an interesting journey. I went to a place where I feel I was weighing the choice to return to life or not. I returned and felt I wasn't done yet. I had much more to do.
