### Did Consciousness Evolve To Express Reality More Efficiently? https://i.imgsafe.org/0f59644477.jpg #### The second law of thermodynamics states that the information in an isolated system tends to become unpredictable (entropy). Given that the universe is an isolated system, we should expect the information content of the universe to become completely unpredictable. The evolutionary force, in contrast, tends towards greater organization and predictability. Organisms maintain their predictable states by consuming food, which has low entropy. Thus organisms convert the low entropy in the environment to their own organizational ends. #### In consuming low entropy stuff, organisms also excrete high entropy, and the more effective an organism is at this process of consumption, the more likely it is to survive. This is because one organism inevitably will start consuming or exploiting others for their owns ends, and thus outlive them by being more efficient in their use of (free) energy to acquire more of it. This process at the heart of evolution creates novelty in the form of exploiting the low entropy environment and other organisms in more and more efficient ways. This process is culminating in our higher intelligence and consciousness. #### Based on this observation we can also hypothesize that any entities that exist at any particular time (actual ontology), and the novelty of new entities being created, ultimately reflects this drive toward ever more efficient ways of using energy. If we consider this in a deeper way, we can see this process as the universe ever more efficiently expressing itself. If we connect that consideration with the consideration that consciousness is the effective bottleneck of modern, intelligent humans, we can hypothesize that consciousness is the most effective way that the universe has found of expressing itself. ### What do You Think?

The cosmos as a whole doesn't seem to need to be efficient. Life is a drive towards efficient use of available resources, and the present result of what we call life is us, conscious human beings. So I'd say efficiency is the means to the goal of consciousness and not the other way around.
