In last week's article The Blockchain and Fish - Atieno's Story , I proposed can blockchain/decentralized ledger technologies be a solution to Atieno's dilemma, one that affects a lot of women in developing countries, especially in fishing villages. _____ # Recap Is there a solution to the below issues, and can blockchain help? > * Develop community run fish farms, specifically run by women groups as they are the most affected. (co-operative societies) > * Develop a solution or way to ensure that the fish being harvested is of the right age, weight and has been sustainably sourced. (Data acquisition) >* Develop a solution to ensure that the women get the right prices for the fish they sell. Can they be connected directly to the customers instead of using middlemen? The solution I propose is an application on the blockchain, Hyperledger have sawtooth, which is robust enough to handle this kind of supply chain scenarios. In our scenario we have: * Atieno - Fish Lady * Co-operative society * Regulator * Buyers Atieno is our fish lady with several customers located in different parts of the country, she will have access to the blockchain network via the application, which comprises of other women dealing in the sale of fish also. The co-operative society will be checking and updating information with regards to the catch brought in by different sellers, it has rights to add and update information on the blockchain network. The regulators and buyers will have read only rights to the blockchain network. ____ # How will it all work

1. Atieno has her fish and used the applications user interface or a USSD service to record all the details about the catch to the ledger. Her entire catch can be recorded as a transaction batch, with each fish recorded as a transaction batch, with each fish recorded as a transaction within the batch. 2. After Atieno saves her entry to the ledger, it goes to the next stage in the supply chain, the co-operative society which queries the ledger for details about specific catches and adds details reflecting the processing date and time. 3. Along the supply chain, the regulator may access the application to query the ledger for details about specific catches e.g owner, the location of catch to verify legitimacy. N.B: There maybe protected zones within the lake that fishermen are not supposed to fish, the location data will verify if the fish was caught in a restricted zone or not. 4. Buyers are able to use the application to query the ledger to check and make sure Atieno was truthful/trustful in her transaction. The buyer is guaranteed that Atieno sources her fish sustainably. # Conclusion This is just a simplified concept of how distributed ledger technology (Blockchain) can be used to help people in similar situations as Atieno. Is it viable? Yes, but really complex in real life to integrate as it requires a lot of input from all participating parties. The same concept can be applied to other assets e.g tree logging, carbon reporting etc. Blockchain has real world applications that can really bring social change. ## What do you think? ___ References 1. Hyperledger Sawtooth 2. TED Talk:Bettina Warburg

Great idea but it would really have to be very simple to understand. Most of these guys are illiterate they only understand the game of cash - buy and pay, most will not even accept credit! Crypto is hard even for learned guys and if its fully to be accepted, it needs to acquire money characteristics.

I think the idea is great! It occurred to me also that blockchain can help implementing very simple (and fast) alternatives to fair trade... By the same means as you describe here. When you buy the fair trade item you could access the blockchain and know exactly who, how, when, and how much the producer was paid to gather that resource. The same applies for the transportation, distribution, and sale. With nowadays networks (such as fair for life), an expensive third part needs to be evolved in all stages which makes the process very very slow. Good post! Thank you!

The possibilities are endless with distributed ledger technologies, and we are only in the beginning. Cant wait to see some of the awesome stuff that will come up.
