Hi fellow Hiveians, Today I wanted to appreciate but reflect a bit on work and side work. <center></center> # Hustle While It Lasts It's interesting when a season has a delayed start! I wonder what life is going to be like when a lot of the "jobs" get removed from the equation because of the automation that occurs with AI. There are certainly going to be a lot of jobs that take a really long time to get replaced, and hopefully I have one of them.. on many fronts at least! My contracting job is thankfully one that will take a LOT longer for it to be replaced by computers and robots and things. It takes a lot of physical effort and different components that don't easily translate well into a single functioning robot. Robots and AI models are pretty good at their individual tasks, but when you add many complex tasks and having to pay attention to surroundings and additional layers, it starts to thankfully get wonky for the machines. This means that people will be doing these jobs for a long time, which is a relief at least. The nature of work is both interesting and important. It gives us a sense of purpose and a bit of an identity. We shouldn't make it our WHOLE identity but it can contain a big portion of it that's for sure. With that identity comes lots of other benefits socially and mentally. I was really getting to enjoy working at the contracting place regularly. We had great people, good banter and got to do some decent and fun work. I was dismayed when the normal season ended up not being so normal, and I got maybe one or two shifts.. lamesauce! I got a text the other day that they needed some work! I was pretty excited and immediately said yes, so that I can make some extra cash but also spend some time in a different environment with people and maybe learn a little more that day. This is where I was thinking about the work I do, and how it is for sure great in my primary job, but how long will my primary job last is the question? I have what they would call "knowledge work" in what I do for my primary job. It's really fun and fascinating stuff, but for some odd reason there is a gigantic push to eliminate knowledge work instead of eliminating manual labor first. You would think that it might be easier or faster to supplant the factory jobs but strangely, the AI algorithms are pretty hell-bent on the knowledge stuff. I am fortunate in that I have several back-up plans.. I would rather not have to implement those backup plans, but having them is a fantastic insulator to all of the chaos. I know I am incredibly fortunate and lucky to have multiple back up plans in case the job market becomes difficult, but it's hard not to shake that feeling in the day we live in. The crazy and sad part is the system is also hell bent on inflating the shit out of everything from a cost perspective, so while people might be losing jobs, their damn costs don't go down, they freaking go up! Fuckers. lol. I think with the contract work, I am lucky to take it one day at a time. The time spent out of the house can be tough, but keeping my skills up and retained for the eventuality that the knowledge work I do will be eliminated, is a bit of a bitter pill to swallow. I drifted a little bit in the content and context of the post.. but I think it's a lot about the modern struggles we are facing with the large scale unemployment that is likely on the horizon for many people. We can never assume we will not be in one of the categories! What about you, do you have other things you could do if your primary job is eliminated with AI? How do you feel about that? Let me know in the comments! # <center></center> -CmplXty. Real human written content, never AI. All pictures are mine unless otherwise stated <center></center> <center>**Connect with me!**</center> Do you want to get paid, in crypto, for searching the internet? I always thought I would never experience this reality! When people talked, or when I read or watched a movie where robots would do our work, I thought it was a very distant future. But that future is already the present. Itβs not science fiction. I am a teacher and I see that there are fewer and fewer students interested in attending classes. I imagine that my job, as it has been until now, will disappear. Perhaps, at some point, I will become a student of Artificial Intelligence. Or maybe I will become a politician!! Excellent topic. Regards

Yeah it's very strange to see this type of thing become reality in my early lifetime. I would've thought when I was in my 60's or 70's this would come to pass but certainly not now. The thing humans are best at is adapting. Will we be able to adapt to this? I certainly hope so!

Hmm I do *hope* that by the time this happens, I probably have enough to feed myself and I can perhaps choose to retire a little earlier than schedule, or have probably pivoted to something else, like maybe an active writer on Hive? Hahaha.

Yeah dude, that's for sure! It's important to be thinking about this type of thing now, because it will likely happen eventually. I don't know what the jobs will be specifically that get eliminated, but they are trimming around the edges now. Gotta stay diverse to survive!

AI should, in theory be a huge bonus for mankind, but alas, as you say, the effects on the workforce will, in time, be catastrophic. If life and economies ran to a fairer model, we would all reap the benefits but of course the profits will end up in the same few hands, I am certainly not a socialist and in fact very pro capitalism, but I am certain you know exactly what I mean. The idea of the drudgery of most jobs and the dry research being taken away by the ~~terminators~~ AIbot's to free up the minds of the masses to conduct more fulfilling, creative roles is appealing but in reality, we know how it will go. > so while people might be losing jobs, their damn costs don't go down, they freaking go up! Fuckers. lol. Amen brother, ain't it the way of the world? Good to hear that you have thought far enough through to have built-in contingency plans, (I would expect nothing less). I always enjoy the humble, reality of your words, that is something AI could never replicate. Take good care of you and yours man, happy August π»

Yeah dude, I know what you mean. Corporate fascism is alive and well in the world today! By the real meaning of the word, not this silly trope that people toss around without really understanding what the meaning is. Yes for sure the whole AI thing is being sold to us as a release from the banality of many jobs, but in reality it is just one of the most intense control mechanisms possible. That is what many of us fear, but the important thing is that many, many people are speaking out against it. The more we collectively say NO, the higher the chance that the worst will not come to pass. We should never become lax in our desire to fight the madness, but we have to celebrate the wins when we get them! Cheers mate, happy August! Hope it's a month full of progressive walk milestones and you'll be at a few kilometers before you know it!

>By the real meaning of the word, not this silly trope that people toss around without really understanding what the meaning is. **Nailed it man!** They do a dis-service to the idea of protest and speaking out from a position of knowledge and understanding and so often, love to shut down debate with a sly slogan orr two. I would far rather have genuine debate and maybe learn a thing or two from the other person, I have many friends with whom I disagree strongly on many things, but after spirited debate, we go back to being regular friends and hopefully both learn a point or two that we hadn't considered before. I am convinced we have many similarities in how we see the world, politically and philosophically but probably a few points we could happily disagree on without ~~cancelling~~ each other π Just imagine how much that collective defiance would be if we all operated from similar principles, that NO! would ring fear to the people and organisations that need to hear it most...

Having a few backup plans in place for if/when our primary job gets taken away by AI is necessary. I've heard of a few people who mostly helpless about it and want to believe that AI is currently overrated, it'll take more time than we expect before the eventuality of most human jobs taken away. I personally just want to be prepared for whatever happens, so I spend some time learning skills and working jobs that AI will definitely not replace anytime soon.

Yeah man, I hear you on that! I am trying to keep myself diversified so that I can take up the mantle of something if my primary activities get eliminated somehow. I don't *think* I will get eliminated because I am an incredibly diverse person in the skills realm, but you never know.. it's always good to be prepared!
