Supporting Farmers
Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today we took some time to do one of the most important things: support local farmers!

# Local Farmers

The most important thing we can do economically is doing what we can all the time to support local businesses. The country and world relies on small businesses more than you could imagine, but companies like Walmart and others don’t want you to know that because it questions their importance in the world.

With this idea always in mind, we have been trying to do what we can to support our local farms especially. They are the most vital part to the local health and community since they are the ones who keep hundreds if not thousands of people fed. It also helps to reduce waste like packaging, transport and other things if you go directly to the source to get your foods. We certainly do that now!

The farm here is incredibly close to our house so we are glad to get plants and stuff from them. This time they had an awesome sale on grown tomato plants that were already caged. (Don’t love the metal cages, read some stuff about leeching into the soil the chemicals but haven’t gotten a good alternative to them yet) it was 6.50$ per fully grown plant! We were sold and grabbed a few of them!

![FD8746FF-7D9C-439E-BE8A-D933755F719E.jpeg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmcYfUsVcuaJEWckUPDwfYkad1rbQ3LuSBYXSqT3vGjUj7/FD8746FF-7D9C-439E-BE8A-D933755F719E.jpeg)

I also try to grab some nice dirt when I’m there to help make some additional potted plants on the deck. The dirt is nice and local as well, from Maine and it’s organic which is equally as important. They have all kinds of great compost and cow manure as well but I’m not sure if we need that yet, hopefully we can get by with just using the soil here and fertilizer to get us along with the planting season.

![65E539B1-B580-4992-B35C-FBC1FFA43716.jpeg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmRvhtfVpMACkA23QkhZy9v4mVsGJEkGrx6hVpkzr3rwwb/65E539B1-B580-4992-B35C-FBC1FFA43716.jpeg)

The crazy part is that the plants almost didn’t fit in the car! Lol. I’m glad we were able to get them in one trip, I don’t think they would have given me a problem about coming back and doing two trips but that would have been annoying to have to do so I’m glad it wasn’t something I had to spend time doing. The little man was having fun helping me and was excited to sit in the back with the plants!

![B9BB9228-4E6A-426B-8EF7-4D5F65C83B01.jpeg](https://images.hive.blog/DQmYpNmxLRVjfE5nCmHAULEnkbagZNE8o32Zm5Zio9SB8gG/B9BB9228-4E6A-426B-8EF7-4D5F65C83B01.jpeg)

I also find it fun and important to show the little man that you don’t just buy food at the grocery stores, you buy them right from the farms and farmers that actually grow the stuff. He’s been to more farms in his short life so far than most kids in the cities around the country! It’s a good thing but also sad that people are so disconnected from the way things are grown and produced. Hopefully we can reduce that as much as we can by doing small things like this!

Excellent stuff that youvare supporting your local farmers. I way prefer to support small family businesses instead of massive supermarkets or multinationals even if it works out more expensive.

Thanks man! For sure! The local farms are the most important part of local economies and one of the only things that hasn't been priced out of business by groups like Walmart and others. They try but they can't compete with local farms and fresh produce for quality and taste. I know a lot of people shop at Walmart and the like but I prefer to get the staples right from the farmers, giving them cash when I can. Keep locals fed and money in their wallet and you are doing something right I think!

heck yeah! we have been doing that for a few years now with our little garden. It's the little things in life, right, that makes you feel like we're making a difference. We feel the same, although we end up with way too many tomatoes at season end. I'm thinking of making a tomato wine this year, however. I found an old bootlegger recipe for it, so that should be fun to try.

Whoa, tomato wine?!? How come I’ve never heard of that? Lol now I’m intrigued!

Yeah it’s great to do this type of stuff. Now that we do it we will never go back to not doing it! We just found a really incredible gem of a farm today. They didn’t have much to sell but you got to pick your own lettuce, spinach and stuff. It was interesting! We have never seen wild spinach or arugula before so that was really cool to see. I’ll post about it sometime this week, got a few more scheduled before that one will come. They don’t take the money up front, they bill you and you mail them a check so that was funny to see.

I hadn't heard of wild spinach before...sounds interesting though. Is it like a foraged type thing folks are now farming? I've picked some wild asparagus before, which is really good if you like asparagus, but that's the extent of my foraging skills.

Yeah, can't wait to see that post. I'll have to dig out that *Alaska Bootlegger* book too and tag you in the wine recipe. That book is s classic.
