Can art be expensive?

Yesterday I went to an art show to SR Kalimat Art Exhibition in UB City Bangalore. The art is mainly in Arabic which I dont understand. But the main point of this post does art can be expensive so that common people could not buy it. All the art which was shown was more than Rs 1,50,000 that is roughly around $2400. 

I am not commenting on the art because since I do not know Arabic it is very wrong on my part to comment on the art or artist.
