He seems to gaze into the handheld device in such a way that renders all-too-familiar today, as if he's just read a bad tweet or recoiling from a Trump-related push notification from the Times. He would almost look unremarkable, if only he and the world around him existed at any point in the past decade. So I would like to know from my fellow steemians that do you believe there exists a time travel where someone from the future dropped his smartphone in the 19th century. If not the time travel, what you think is he holding by seeing his expression. Is it a mirror.

That is one interesting topic. I am sure time travel is just one of those things which our limited human mind can't grasp yet. Is it possible? According to Einstein yes it is. But, until somebody actually proves it, it is not possible to our human mind. :) It truly does like he is taking a selfie with his new Iphone. lol

Yep @awakentolife, I do feel that it is one of the topics which is hardly come to the main stream media. It is very much possible, might be we still have to wait some more years to actually find out. Might be an iPhone 58 :P.

I think we know for sure it's not an iPhone, because you'd definitely be able to see the Apple logo. haha But seriously, I've tried my best to think about what he could be holding, even after reading the history of the mural, and I just can't figure it out. I think the time travel thing is unlikely since this is a mural painted by someone who was attempting to tell the story of the history of a town rather than painting an event that was unfolding in front of him. Unless of course the time traveler visited the artist while he was painting it. This also seems unlikely since the artist lived until 1982 and never said anything about such an event. In fact, he probably had to explain what the Native is holding to many people, since it seems like it would be confusing to look at even if you had never seen a smartphone. Of course, that begs the question about alternate time lines. Maybe he didn't reveal it to us in this time line but has in another... Great thoughts and discussion. Thanks for sharing.

@ethandsmith Thanks for the comment. There is counter question while looking at the image. Just look at the expression of the person holding it, it clearly shows that he is holding something which is actually he has never seen before. The best bet can be a mirror, when you see a mirror for the first time the expression changes. I have tried this experiment with the children, their eyebrows just go up seeing themselves.

That does seem likely, since at the time, mirrors would have been new to the Natives, and the painter may have wanted to capture that sentiment in the mural. I like that theory.
