**Environment Basics**

Glancing at the environmental studies textbook of ninth grade, I give a painful sigh, reminiscing all the memories of last minute mugging up sessions, in order to pass that paper. I wonder why I never considered environmental studies to be an important part of my curriculum. Environment sustains us. It is integral that we know and respect it, in order to thrive. Maybe everyone neglected it just as I did, that is why today we end up in a situation where the environment is crying for help as we consume all its resources and heading confidently towards our own doom.

Therefore, basics first. The questions that arise are, what the renewable and non-renewable resources are, how have the non-renewable resources depleted, what are its consequences and what is our part to save our world.

In brief, renewable resources are those resources that are abundantly available to us, in the form of solar energy, wind energy, water energy, etc. Non-renewable resources are those resources that once used are lost forever, like fossil fuels, formed by millions of years of pressure and temperature applied to decomposing plant and animal remains.

**Current Scenario**

We, the human beings, the most intelligent species residing the planet, decide to exploit the non-renewable resources at its best, till we realized that they are going to get extinguished one day.

"*The sooner we get started with alternative energy sources and recognize that fossil fuels makes us less secure as a nation, and more dangerous as a planet, the better off we'll be*", said Lindsey Graham, an American Politician. Alas, we know as much to pay heed to his words. Fossil fuels are being overused and the condition has become such that there is a going to be a fuel crisis in the near future, predict scientists.

The non-renewable resources that we use with such zeal have taken a toll on the environment too. Global warming, greenhouse effect, pollution of all forms and climate changes are some of the long term consequences of fossil fuel usage. The ozone layer which protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, is thinning due to the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Polar ice caps are melting leading to increase in the sea level globally which puts to risk the cities located by the sea that are prone on getting submerged. We do not want more stories like Atlantis, do we?

Numerous environment treaties have been signed, councils set up, amendments made, adopting and harnessing renewable resources have been tried, but nothing brings a significant change to this alarming global issue.

**Carbon Credits**

A concept called carbon credits has been started which aims to control the carbon emission by various nations. Carbon credits are a sort of tradable contract or permit that allows a particular nation to emit one tonne of carbon dioxide per credit. This contract can be sold by nations who intend to reduce their "carbon footprints" in order to lessen carbon dioxide emission.
