Rest In Power Travis Nagdy

I awoke this morning to discover that another comrade had been taken from us far too soon. Just after midnight last night shots were fired a couple blocks from my house and 21 year old Travis Nagdy was killed.

Travis was a fixture down at Injustice Square Park, a leader and a leading voice of his generation. One of my first memories of him is from the second Friday night of protest here, when we were marching to one of the 'Snob Knob' neighborhoods of Louisville to pay the mayor a visit at home. A few miles into the march I found myself in the van of the march, with Travis beside and in front of me, his voice ringing out to lead us in chants as we made our way down Bardstown Road.

In the weeks and months since that night, Travis was a fixture in the park and on marches and protest actions. I didn't know him as well as I would like but we shared many moments, both good and bad. From tense confrontations with police and militiamen, tear gas and pepper balls, to celebrations of the little victories, Breonna's Law passing and her birthday celebration and everything in between, Travis was there and I am honored to call him a comrade.

The photos in this post are from the day that the attorney general announced that no charges would be filed in relation to Breonna Taylor's death. Travis is in the center of the photo with the big head of hair and the mask on his chin. My pandemic partner got arrested there later that night, Travis was there the next day when they were released from the jail.

I wasn't home when the shooting happened, one of my roommates may have the covid so I'm quarantining at my pandemic partner's for the time being. A friend lives next to where the shooting happened, he heard the shots but didn't get to the window in time to get a look at the car. He also told me that there were shots fired there the night before as well and that he didn't think Travis was killed by accident (randomly). I appreciate that.  

Yeah, it's a half mile or less from University of Louisville's campus and damn near adjacent to I-65, there's so many ways to get away from there.  My best friend used to live right at that intersection, I've spent way too much time there myself.  

They'd reworked some old army cadences to fit the protests earlier this summer, we'd marched together chanting that.  Goddamn.

This is from last night. I talked to my friend that lives a few houses away again, he had heard the carjacking hypothesis that @galenkp mentioned but said that the shots and the car gunning its engine after were too close together to fit that well.  Also said that the car quickly turned onto another street and then crashed into a parked car, he wasn't sure if the police even realized the connection between the two. My friend didn't know Travis but had seen him around the neighborhood on several occasions.

What are your thoughts? Was dude a thug in the neighborhood with a target on him *(lay it on me, I'm from LA--shit happens all the time)* or do you think it's more sinister as in not a thug, just an outspoken leader of equal freedom for all targeted by vigilantes?

It's a difficult situation made worse by your closeness, association, with TN. You say about making *sense of it*...You may never do so. It was a carjacking right? 

His struggle is over I guess, it's someone else's time now. Hopefully he can rest easy.

Carjacking, no, not as far as I know.  A police officer had shot and killed someone as part of a traffic stop across town earlier in the night, he had went to the scene once the news got out of that.  He was shot shortly after leaving there, about 15-20 minutes across town near the local university.

You are probably right though, we've had a record year for homicides and the police aren't all that interested in devoting their undivided attention to those things right now.  Their response to the protests have been a sort of unofficial work slowdown but even when that was the case a large percentage of murders went unsolved.

He knows no more pain, fear, uncertainty, I think he will rest easy.  The struggle will go on and he knew that too.  He's not the first to fall and unfortunately most likely won't be the last but I suspect his memory will be a source for those that continue on.

So no one knows how he got shot and by whom? 

145 criminal homicides this year there I heard...Seems a lot. 541 non-fatal shootings. What's the population there...That seems like a lot of people shooting each other all in one place.
