To my ever-loyal friends from the *HiveLearners* community, my warmest greetings!

When YouTube was launched between 2005 and 2007, I didn't believe anyone would be willing to use their precious kilobytes for such a trivial purpose—posting a random video on the internet in the hope that someone else would also spend their valuable time and slow connection **watching** it. I was wrong, of course. Today it's easy to look back and see just how mistaken I was.

Thousands of people adopted the platform, migrating from **blogs** and **vlogs** to the magical digital TV tube that had the power to be faster than any other tool I knew at the time. Later, I came to understand that it was due to good coding and the use of advanced codecs.

But why didn’t I make money with YouTube?

When it all started, I was there, *Gandalf*. It seems it was thousands of years ago. I was firm in stating that YouTube was doomed to fail, as the data consumption was absurd, and there would be no way to gather resources to cover the computational costs (and I’m not even talking about profit!).

To me, this project would collapse in a matter of months.

Then Google came along and bought everything, and suddenly there was a lot of money to keep the site online and expand to other countries and languages (the platform only arrived in Brazil in 2007). One fact I couldn’t find, but up until 2015, FORBES magazine stated that [YouTube was not profitable](https://forbes.com.br/colunas/2015/02/youtube-ainda-nao-da-lucro-e-culpa-e-dos-usuarios-diretos/).

So how is it possible to monetize user content?
The money comes from other Google projects.

I already had a very old blog before YouTube even existed. The *blogger.com* platform still exists, and occasionally someone finds my material there. I published a lot of very specific content, which was good because there was little information available on those topics, and that brought some traffic to my blog. I signed up for ADSENSE to monetize my texts.

I’ve maintained this ADSense account for over twenty years and have never been able to withdraw the earnings because there's a minimum threshold set at USD 100. It’s taking me a long time to reach it, and my growth is just a few cents per month. Since I haven't been posting anymore, the content becomes outdated and the traffic keeps dropping.

It was only in 2022 that I discovered HIVE, and through it, I was finally able to monetize my writing. That’s because I prefer creating written content—I don’t enjoy making videos. I’m also not very skilled with photography, although I try to do something in that area—usually related to cooking or wine. I lack a bit of talent.

Here, I was able to write and see the results of monetization actually reaching my pocket. Thanks to HIVE, I was able to buy a used computer when mine broke, using USD 130 from my portfolio of assets, in an emergency situation (I wouldn’t have had any other way to buy even a used device, let alone afford installments on a new one).

# Conclusion

Monetizing social media, for me, was not a way to make money or make a living. It's just an extra that is generating a small accumulation of value. It served as motivation for me to write more, and through that, I developed other parallel skills, which was my greatest gain!

Quando foi lançado o youtube em 2005~2007 eu não acreditei que alguem seria capaz de usar seus míseros kilobytes para uma finalidade tão banal, de postar um vídeo qualquer na internet, na esperança que alguma outra pessoa também investisse seu tempo precioso e conexão lenta **assistindo**. Eu me enganei, é claro. Hoje é fácil olhar para trás e dizer o quanto equivocado eu estava.

Milhares de pessoas adotaram a plataforma, migrando dos **blogs** e **vlogs** para o mágico tubo de televisão digital, que tinha o poder de ser mais veloz do que qualquer outra ferramenta conhecida por mim na época. Depois vim a saber que se tratava de boa codificação e uso de codecs avançados.

Mas porquê eu não fiz dinheiro com youtube?

Quando tudo começou eu estava lá, *Gandalf*. Foi, ao que parece, à milhares de anos. Eu fui taxativo em afirmar que o youtube estava fadado ao fracasso, pois o consumo de dados era absurdo, e não haveria forma de captar recursos para manter os custos computacionais (e nem estou falando de lucros!).

Para mim, esse projeto iria fracassar em questão de meses.

Ai veio o google e comprou tudo, e de repente havia muito dinheiro para sustentar o site no ar e expandir para outros países e línguas (a plataforma chega ao Brasil somente em 2007). Um dado que eu não consegui encontrar, porém até 2015 a revista FORBES afirmar que [o youtube não gerava lucro](https://forbes.com.br/colunas/2015/02/youtube-ainda-nao-da-lucro-e-culpa-e-dos-usuarios-diretos/).

Então como é possível monetizar os conteúdos dos usuários?
O dinheiro sai da conta de outros projetos do Google.

Eu já tinha um blog muito antigo antes do youtube existir. A plataforma *blogger.com* ainda existe e ocasionalmente alguem encontra meu material lá. Publiquei várias coisas bem específicas, o que foi bom pois até então não havia material disponível, o que trouxe algum fluxo para meu blog. Eu me inscrevi no ADSENSE para monetizar meus textos.

Por mais de vinte anos eu mantenho essa conta ADSense e nunca pude retirar o valor recebido, pois existe um valor mínimo estipulado em USD 100. Estou demorando muito para chegar lá, e meu crescimento é de centavos por mês. Como não tenho mais postado nada, o conteúdo acaba ficando obsoleto e o tráfego só diminui.

Foi apenas em 2022 que eu conheci a HIVE e através dela consegui monetizar meus textos. Isso porque eu prefiro criar conteúdo escrito, não gosto de vídeos. Também não sou muito bom com fotos, apesar de tentar fazer alguma coisa nesse sentido, quase sempre é sobre culinária ou vinhos. Falta um pouco de talento.

Aqui eu pude escrever e enxergar o resultado da monetização chegando até o meu bolso. Graças a HIVE eu consegui comprar um computador usado quando o meu quebrou, utilizando USD 130 do meu portfólio de ativos, em uma situação de emergência (eu não teria dinheiro de outra forma para comprar um equipamento usado, e tampouco teria condições de parcelar um equipamento novo)

# Conclusão

Monetizar rede social para mim não foi um meio de obter dinheiro ou subsistência. É apenas um adicional que está gerando um acúmulo de valor. Serviu de incentivo para que eu escrevesse mais, e assim desenvolvi outras habilidades paralelas, o que foi meu maior ganho!
