Are you overlooking one of Steemit's greatest strengths?

In my lead-in quote from the Steem Whitepaper, the mindset of most social media users is stated clearly and concisely:
>*"People go where people are today, not where people were last year."*
Stated another way, on Steemit, "You're only as good as your latest post."
Nevertheless, if you are an astute user of Steemit, you may have come to recognize and value the other edge of the Steemit sword—namely, security, immutability, and longevity.

Consider these other Steemit quotes:

Here's a quote from the Steem Bluepaper:
>*"The two building blocks of this protocol, both blockchain and token, depend on each other for security, immutability and longevity, and are therefore integral to each others’ existence."*
[**- Steem Bluepaper -**](https://steem.io/steem-bluepaper.pdf)
And here's another quote from the Steem Whitepaper:
>*"Under blockchain-based social media, a creator or author would always be able to point to a public record and timestamp showing proof of their content origination."*

When it comes to STEEM and SBD crypto currency,

all Steemit users recognize the importance of security, immutability, and longevity of records. But are you leveraging those qualities for your general posts? Do you know enough about the blockchain to understand what is secured and what may not be?

Steemit images are *not* stored on the blockchain.

Just google "Are steemit images stored on the blockchain?" and you will find any number of relevant articles.
I write extensively on the Steemit blockchain because of my expectation that it will be secure, immutable, and durable. I want my words to be preserved for my descendants.
But, what if I occasionally want to preserve some other form of data? For example, an image, or a video, or perhaps even some executable code?
I use lots of public domain images to illustrate my articles, but I do so with the understanding that they are not permanent parts of the blockchain, as [**described in this article.**](https://hive.blog/steemit/@hmushtaq/have-you-ever-wondered-where-steemit-stores-all-the-images)
Today I began testing a (relatively) simple way to save photos and other non-text data securely on the blockchain. My initial (successful!) experiment [**can be seen here.**](https://hive.blog/steemit/@creatr/experimental-steemit-blockchain-file-archive-test)
I'll describe my process in some detail in my next article.
