One of Chile's many advantages is that, due to its shape, every region has beaches, bordering the Pacific Ocean to the west. It's true that the further south you go, the colder the already cold ocean waters become, but even if you can't swim in the sea, either because you're too far south in Chile or because of the seasonal climate, it's always nice to go for a walk along the coast, especially if you live in a city like Santiago.

Es cierto que mientras más al Sur va uno más frías son las aguas, de por sí ya frías, del océano, pero aunque uno no pueda bañarse en el mar, ya sea por estar muy al Sur de Chile o por el clima estacional, siempre es agradable ir a darse una vuelta por la costa, sobre todo si uno vive en una ciudad como Santiago.

In other publications I have already told you about Viña del Mar, Valparaíso and Concón, but in the same region of Valparaíso there are other very nice coastal towns and one of them is Algarrobo. A little more than an hour's drive from the Chilean capital you find this small town that vibrates in summer and bustles with the number of visitors who go to bathe in beaches like El Canelo, or who go for a walk to Mirasol, but in low season and especially in winter is a very quiet town, maybe too much. On a Monday or Tuesday in August, to say something, it's difficult to find a restaurant open late, for example, as many businesses operate on reduced hours during the dates of fewer visitors and concentrate most of their resources to meet the high demand of summer. In Algarrobo you can do many things: there is a go-karting track, paintball field, swimming, diving, you can rent a boat to go around the bay, or you can swim in the largest swimming pool in the world. San Alfonso del Mar is a housing complex located in Algarrobo that houses a salt water lagoon of 1 kilometer long, about 8 hectares of surface and more than 250 million liters of salt water, 250 million liters! That makes it the largest pool in the world. I have not had the opportunity to visit it, but I have seen it from the outside when I walk along the coast and it is impressive, so it's a good plan to do.

>En otras publicaciones ya les he hablado de Viña del Mar, Valparaíso y Concón, pero en la misma región de Valparaíso hay otras ciudades costeras muy bonitas y una de ellas es Algarrobo. A poco más de una hora de camino desde la capital chilena se encuentra uno con esta pequeña ciudad que vibra en verano y bulle de la cantidad de visitantes que van a bañarse en playas como el Canelo, o que van a pasear a Mirasol, pero que en temporada baja y sobre todo en el invierno es un pueblo muy tranquilo, tal vez demasiado. Un lunes o martes de Agosto, por decir algo, es difícil encontrar un restaurante abierto tarde, por ejemplo, ya que muchos negocios funcionan en horario reducido durante las fechas de menos visitas y concentran la mayoría de sus recursos en atender la alta demanda del verano. En Algarrobo se pueden hacer muchas cosas: hay una pista de kartings, campo para practicar paintball, se puede nadar, bucear, se puede rentar un bote para dar la vuelta a la bahía, o puede uno bañarse en la piscina más grande del mundo. San Alfonso del Mar es un complejo habitacional ubicado en Algarrobo que alberga una laguna de agua salada de 1 kilómetro de largo, unas 8 hectáreas de superficie y más de 250 millones de litros de agua salada ¡250 millones de litros! Eso la convierte en la piscina más grande del mundo. Yo no he tenido la oportunidad de visitarla, pero sí la he visto desde el exterior cuando camino por la costa y es impresionante, así que es un buen panorama para hacer.

In my case, during this visit to Algarrobo, I didn't do much. I love walking barefoot along the seashore and letting the waves submerge my feet for a while before retreating back into the sea, watching my footprints form and how the sea erases them almost as quickly. Although the days are cool during this time of year, the afternoons are usually sunny, but not as hot as during the summer, which makes the weather pleasant.

>En mi caso durante esta visita a Algarrobo no hice muchas cosas. Me encanta salir a caminar descalzo por la orilla del mar y dejar que las olas sumerjan mis pies un rato antes de retirarse de nuevo al mar, ver cómo se van formando mis huellas y cómo el mar las va borrando casi con la misma velocidad. A pesar de que los días están frescos durante esta época del año, las tardes suelen ser soleadas, pero no tan calurosas como durante el verano, lo que hace que el clima sea agradable.

As in other beaches in Chile, in Mirasol there's a cave called _La Cueva del Pirata (The Pirate's Cave)_, which you can go down some steps. It can also be explored inside, although it's not very big, and in this opportunity I was able to get close to that area that I didn't know and then spend a couple of hours reading on the beach. I confess that there's something special about reading on the beach in the afternoon. The sun advances on the horizon and you get wrapped up in reading until dusk begins to fall and then comes that golden hour that reflects on the water and you interrupt your reading to sit and contemplate the sunset and reflect on life - or on the book too - as you breathe in the salty air and feel the air begin to cool until night comes and then the waves roar louder in the black silence of the night. When I was more of a kid I considered myself more of a mountain man than a beach man. I really liked the cabins in the forest, the huge trees and the songs of the birds, but as I have become more adult I have begun to take more and more affection to the beaches, to those walks in the sand, to read listening to the sea and above all to see the sunset and watch the sun sink into the sea. Those moments of tranquility can be experienced in Algarrobo, especially in low seasons or in the autumn and winter months. Some may think it's boring, but the beach does not only mean party, summer and alcohol; going to the beach can also mean tranquility and relaxation and sitting and contemplating the sea, how many of you like these plans? >Al igual que en otras playas de Chile, en Mirasol hay una cueva llamada _La Cueva del Pirata_, a la cual se puede bajar por unos escalones. También se puede explorar en el interior, aunque no es muy grande, y en esta oportunidad pude acercarme a esa zona que no conocía para luego pasarme un par de horas leyendo en la playa. Confieso que hay algo especial en leer en la playa en la tarde. El sol avanza en el horizonte y uno se envuelve en la lectura hasta que el atardecer comienza a caer y entonces viene esa hora dorada que se refleja sobre el agua y uno interrumpe la lectura para sentarse a contemplar la caída del sol y a reflexionar sobre la vida - o sobre el libro también - mientras respira el aire salado y siente cómo el aire comienza a refrescar hasta que llega la noche y entonces las olas rugen más fuerte en el negro silencio de la noche. Cuando era más niño me consideraba un hombre más de montaña que de playa. Me gustaban mucho las cabañas en el bosque, los árboles enormes y los cantos de las aves, pero conforme me he ido haciendo más adulto he comenzado a tomarle más y más cariño a las playas, a esos paseos en la arena, a leer oyendo el mar y sobre todo a ver caer la tarde y a ver el sol hundirse en el mar. Esos momentos de tranquilidad pueden vivirse en Algarrobo, sobre todo en temporadas bajas o en los meses de otoño e invierno. Algunos pensarán que es aburrido, pero la playa no sólo significa fiesta, verano y alcohol; ir a la playa también puede ser tranquilidad, relajación y sentarse a contemplar el mar, ¿a cuántos de ustedes les gustan estos planes?
