A24 is the production company behind films like _Minari_, _The Lighthouse_ and _Hereditary_, among many others that I've found very well made. Looking through their most recent works, I came across this movie starring Awkwafina, whom I met at _Ocean's Eight_ and enjoyed at _Crazy Rich Asians_, and I was struck by the script proposal, so I gave it a try.

Revisando entre sus trabajos más recientes me topé con esta cinta protagonizada por Awkwafina, a quien conocí en _Ocean's Eight_ y me divirtió en _Crazy Rich Asians_, y me llamó la atención la propuesta del guión, así que le di una oportunidad.

_**The Farewell**_ (title that I love, by the way) tells the story of a Chinese family that over the years and for reasons of life have separated. Some went abroad, others stayed, the youngest have moved away a bit from traditional values, etc., but deep down they're still a family. One day, something happens that will disrupt that distance and that's that the matriarch of the family, Nai Nai (the term that refers to the maternal grandmother) suffers from terminal lung cancer. She goes to the doctor accompanied by her sister, who receives the diagnosis and hides it from her to discuss it with the other relatives and decide whether to tell her, or not. On this side of the world it may seem unethical, manipulative, or a vile lie to hide the medical condition from someone (it's even illegal in some countries) but the practice is more common and less condemned on that side of the world, so the viewer should knowing how to place oneself in the context of history.

>_**The Farewell**_ (título que me encanta, por cierto) cuenta la historia de una familia China que a lo largo de los años y por cuestiones de la vida se han separado. Algunos se fueron al extranjero, otros se quedaron, los más jóvenes se han alejado un poco de los valores tradicionales, etc., pero en el fondo siguen siendo una familia. Un día, sucede algo que trastocará esa distancia y es que la matriarca de la familia, Nai Nai (término con el que se refieren a la abuela materna) padece un cáncer de pulmón terminal. Acude al médico acompañada de su hermana, quien recibe el diagnóstico y se lo oculta para conversarlo con los demás familiares y decidir su decírselo a ella, o no. De este lado del mundo puede parecer poco ético, manipulador, o una vil mentira ocultarle a alguien su condición médica (incluso es ilegal en algunos países) pero la práctica es más común y menos condenada de aquel lado del mundo, así que el espectador debe saber ubicarse en el contexto de la historia.

Faced with the imminent death of the grandmother, the relatives use the pretext of the wedding of one of their grandchildren to reunite the whole family, who travel from other parts of the world to China to honor the couple although they hide their true intention: to give a silent goodbye to Nai Nai.

We're not talking about a wealthy family like _Crazy Rich Asians_; rather, they're relatives with a middle-class situation and a not very large number of direct relatives. The grandmother had two children and each child had one more child. One of them is the one who's about to get married and the other is Billi, who lives in New York and has always been grandmother's favorite. Billi is independent, strong, has character and doesn't follow the path traced by others. It's something like the black sheep of the family. A black sheep not very successful at work and in life in general, but she's also a very sensitive and sentimental person, that's why her family first doesn't want to tell her anything and then they don't want to let her go to China, because they believe that she will not be able to hide her emotions at the tender gaze of her beloved grandmother.

>No estamos hablando de una familia adinerada como la de _Crazy Rich Asians_; se trata más bien de parientes con una situación de clase media y una cantidad de parientes directos no muy numerosa. La abuela tuvo dos hijos y cada hijo tuvo un hijo más. Uno de ellos es el que está a punto de casarse y la otra es Billi, quien vive en Nueva York y siempre ha sido la favorita de la abuela. Billi es independiente, fuerte, tiene carácter y no sigue el camino trazado por los demás. Es algo así como la oveja negra de la familia. Una oveja negra poco exitosa en el trabajo y en la vida en general, pero también es una persona muy sensible y sentimental, por eso su familia primero no quiere contarle nada y luego no la quiere dejar ir a China, porque creen que no podrá ocultar sus emociones ante la mirada tierna de su amada abuela.

Hence a dramatic story, but also comic, that leaves a series of situations that serve us not only to fix the socio-cultural context in which the story takes place but to analyze the central question: is it right to lie for love? Nai Nai's family believes that cancer patients are not killed by the disease but by panic, and that telling her her condition would mean early defeat. Something like _"ignorance is  bliss"_. Billi disagrees, shouldn't she know she's going to die? Don't you have the right to be aware of your condition even if it affects you? This dilemma is the backbone of the story and the one that hangs over each of the situations that we see throughout the film.

>De allí parte una historia dramática, pero también cómica, que deja una serie de situaciones que nos sirven no sólo para fijar el contexto socio cultural en el que se desarrolla la historia sino para analizar la cuestión central: ¿es correcto mentir por amor? La familia de Nai Nai tiene la creencia de que a los enfermos de cáncer no los mata la enfermedad sino el pánico y que participarle su condición significaría una derrota anticipada. Algo así como _"la ignorancia es una bendición"_. Billi no está de acuerdo, ¿no debería saber que se va a morir? ¿no tiene derecho a ser consciente de su condición aunque eso la afecte? Este dilema es la columna vertebral de la historia y la que cuelga sobre cada una de las situaciones que vamos viendo a lo largo de la película.

I have a tendency to enjoy stories from Asian countries. Either they make very good movies or I happen to have seen only the very good ones. This is not the exception. Although _**The Farewell**_ is an American co-production, it's a Chinese story, with Chinese actors, a Chinese director and a Chinese story, based on real-life events, or as the film says to the start, _"based on an actual lie"_. The direction and photography are very good, the script is balanced and the performances are compelling (especially that of Awkwafina, who won the Golden Globe for this role) so when you want to see a family drama don't miss the opportunity to see this tape and wonder what would you do? Lying or telling the truth? Or better yet, what would you like? do you wanna been told that you're going to die or been lied in the name of love? I read you in the comments.

>Tengo cierta tendencia a disfrutar de las historias provenientes de los países asiáticos. O hacen muy buen cine o casualmente he visto sólo muy buenas películas. Esta no es la excepción. Si bien _**The Farewell**_ es una coproducción americana, se trata de una historia China, con actores chinos, una directora China y una historia propia de China, basada en hechos de la vida real, o como dice la cinta al inicio, _"basada en una mentira real"_. La dirección y la fotografía son muy buenas, el guión es equilibrado y las actuaciones convincentes (en especial la de Awkwafina, quien obtuvo el Globo de Oro por este papel) así que cuando quieran ver algún drama familiar no dejen pasar la oportunidad de ver esta cinta y preguntarse ¿que harían ustedes? ¿mentir o decir la verdad? O mejor aún, ¿qué les gustaría? ¿que les dijeran que van a morirse o que los engañasen por amor? Los leo en los comentarios.
