**Stats are meaningless even though sometimes confusing at times. South Africa's unemployment rate is topping the charts around the World as it is that high currently and expect it to still deteriorate.**



Today was one of those busy days trying to work out where the economy is in general as making decisions around that information. I use a network of various people I know as we help each other whenever we are called upon. If we don't know someone we will know someone who knows someone who can help and that is how we network as a group.

My old Army buddy runs a successful online warehouse solution for various companies around South Africa. He advertised a job 3 weeks ago for a receiving clerk and had over 2600 job applications. What hit him the most was the caliber of people who were applying for what has to be a fairly low skilled job. Two of the applications received were from ex bank managers and another was from a logistics fleet manager from a well known company. 

How sad is that as this tells you how things really are and that people just want to work. The job market is tough yet does create opportunities for businesses like this to select candidates who are over qualified for that advertised role.

Bringing brains into an operation with better skills is only good for the business as that person could easily be promoted into another role 6 months or a year from now. This is what we were discussing as these new employees can grow with that business making it stronger long term. 

The 2 bank managers would have had there careers in tatters being let loose when they had been thinking of a long term banking career. What they now offer maybe not exactly what they had once envisioned but a career in another industry entirely which should possibly be more lucrative. I know the business they had applied to work for personally and it is going to explode creating more career paths for anyone involved.

When I look back to where I started out and where I ended up it is crazy as you cannot predict the future. Thirty years ago maybe, but today you have to do what suits you as there is no such thing as loyalty to the job. I used to sit in the other camp when it came to loyalty, but it does go both ways and that is what has changed. 5 years in one position and people start asking are you deadwood instead of thinking along the lines that you could be just that good at what you do.
