Today was the day of the big move and clearing out the warehouse so we can hand the keys back. I actually hadn't paid much attention to how much stuff we had even though it didn't look like much. I had two trucks on site and just me to do the work. All I can say is i still have got it not having done much manual labour for a few years now.

My back has never been great so I needed to be careful but I will see how that is tomorrow or after the muscles have cooled down tonight. They will be complaining for sure and I will have to sort that out with some clicks and cracks and possibly a little forced manipulation. I know what to do after  visiting a chiro for a good 18 years now. If it is bad I am not stupid and will get him to do the resetting.

I was just trying to work out the tonnage that I moved today and it is quite a bit 777 rolls at 35 kg's each carried by hand and loaded onto a truck. The drivers haven't changed as they didn't lift a hand to help until it was on their trucks and then they even started bitching. The one even asked for help and I had two polite words for him starting with an F and finishing with another F. It took me 4 hours to load the trucks and I am relieved that part is now over. I still have to go back and clean on Monday as I didn't have the energy to sweep today.

It amazes me still how people can watch someone struggling and not think to help. Then when it comes to their turn expect help. Have I missed something somewhere as in my head that doesn't add up. The one driver even pulled up something to sit on to watch me work. This is nothing new to me as this has happened many times before and couldn't be bothered as I would never hire them to work for me. I would rather do it myself knowing it is done correctly and most likely quicker as well.

I think I got this mind set from growing up in a fairly poor family where we had to do "chores" during school holidays. That could mean digging a hole for a swimming pool or clearing an overgrown plot with thorn bushes. My kids have it lucky and they have been protected from those sorts of things. My son the other day was moaning that he and two others had to offload containers and I thought that is good as he needs a little toughening up. I try and get through to him that you need to do the job yourself before you ask others to do it as you need to understand what it takes and where the limits are. That is the sign of good man management as you need to gain the respect of your workforce first.

We were living in England a few years ago and no one was hiring South Africans for the odd manual labor jobs. They were just too soft as they think that work is beneath them and why you pay others to do it. If you need a job you have to be able and willing to take on any work no matter what it is and nothing should be beneath you. Unfortunately most of the youngsters are too soft and think this way today and why nothing is achieved. Quick bucks and no sweat is the likely motto.Lets hope their mindsets and attitude change at some point before it is too late.
