Can Too Much Information Make Us Miserable? A Fasting Experiment

Can consuming too much information make us unhappy, depressed and/or stressed out?

It is as if there was 2 realities in my life. One being the reality of my daily life: talking with people, going for a walk, eating, etc. and the second being the life I live through a screen such as tv, computer & mobile.

Those 2 worlds give me radically different information regarding the state of where I live in and what's going on.

# My Problem

I work from home and I literally, during week days, spend 85%+ of my day in front of my computer. When I work, I listen to various news outlet on YouTube and follow politics very closely.

I live in Canada, a place that at least politically, is a close as it get to a real life version of Tumblr. I tend to think long term and I'm worried that where I live will be radically transformed into something I don't like when my kids will get to grow up.

*I don't want to live in fear* nor alienate people around me with the attitude that I have of being too conscious of what is a very probable future heading our way.

# An Experiment

So here is what I decided to try. For 14 days, I will literally block Youtube from my mobile and desktop. I will refrain my Facebook use to chat only. I will try to reduce to a minimum the amount of information that comes my way and document my change in mood and attitude.

I will be visiting Steemit but also keep it to a minimum, mostly to document via a post how things are going.

# Question

Do you think like me that consuming too much information could be a detriment to our mental health? Please leave your comment below.

Steemit can be a refreshing place if you stick to the pictures of flowers, the cooking, the nature walks and so on. Perhaps go outdoors yourself and do some pictures of parks and plants and so on and post them on steemit - you'll feel better for it.

The mainstream press is full of negativity because they imagine it sells (even though their profits are dropping, and that should be a clue it is putting people off!)

I completely agree....it can depress you. I think it's important to have balance. Some high intensity ingestion and some low intensity, followed by none at all. We need time to process a lot of what goes in. Our subconscious mulls it all over and blends it in but that takes time.

this is a great post. its something I have also thought much about. I feel as if there is so much information from all direction, I myself get a little overloaded and its hard to deal with, thankfully I have music to release alot of the energy that is coming in, but still so, I feel both addicted to the internet as I do find it stresses me out, yet I cant put it down. I am also considering cutting back on my over the wires consumption, its difficult as my career revolves around it, but I would like to set aside two weeks or so as well to cut it out, but im thinking maybe everything for me, tv, computer, phone... go raw, get outside and try to occupy myself in my immediate reality.
