With the rise of Internet and a constantly connected world where most of our time is spent online, there has been the issue of cyber-attacks and privacy issues cropping up as the main focus for many of the users. Nowadays, we all prefer using Biometrics or 2 Factor Authentication for logging into frequently used sites. But the easiest to implement and use of them all still remains the password. This is because it is basically a group of unique alphanumeric text sequence that can be used to authenticate themselves to a service. But this simplicity meant that there are inherent flaws in the way passwords work.
It is basically inefficient and had to be entered every time, even if you were logging in via a previously used device and if you wanted to solve this then you'd have to store a digital copy of it on your system or on the cloud. Both of which were the recipe for disaster as if anyone being compromised is equal to losing your account.
This meant that it could be easily vulnerable if the whole server was compromised. There was also the case of malware, viruses, bots, and key loggers to be able to access the data and leak them out of your system without you noticing it. It also created the problem of Social Engineering and Phishing where the user was tricked into providing their passwords, to which the only option was to not use passwords in the first case, as not using one will mean you don't have anything to give out to the miscreants.

With the issuing of SSL Certificate for authentication, passwords no longer have to be used, which means no more phishing and keylogging attacks will be possible. They also plan to convert the authentication process into a decentralized one, having no central location or server to login.
