# My time in Ecuador – A travel report – part 4

This is part 4 of my travel report from Ecuador. Today's route takes us via Guayaquil and La Libertad to Montañita, from there further north along the Pacific coast until we arrive in Atacames and have to say goodbye to the coast.

Unfortunately, there are hardly any usable photos of the trip to the coast, as we were mostly travelling at night and were able to sleep when we didn't have an opera playing at full volume on the bus TV. So here is just a symbolic picture of the bus journey.

After changing buses in the middle of the night at Guayaquil bus station, we travelled on to La Libertat. The journey ended there because there were no more buses heading north that day. Fortunately, we found a pick-up truck that took us to Montañita on a wooden bench in the back. A dubious pleasure, but we reached our destination in the evening.

## Montañita and the whales

I was impressed by Montañita. Although the little town may not be typical of Ecuador, the hippie charm and the unexpected party atmosphere in the town provided a welcome contrast to the bus journeys of the previous days.

We found a place to stay and soon explored the town's nightlife and the beach. My feet touched the water of the Pacific for the first time. What a contrast to the rainforest in such a short space of time. A truly touching moment.

And then there's the moment when Bud Spencer and Terence Hill could suddenly walk round the corner. This church and the vultures are very reminiscent of the Wild West. And that's where we are.

### Whale watching with a handicap

Either the happy hour the night before was a bit long or I don't tolerate the waves so well. Anyway, we're on a small boat about half an hour off the Pacific coast. I spend most of the time lying down so as not to spit the contents of my stomach on the captain's feet again.

And suddenly the whales are there. Just for a brief but magical moment. I gathered all my energy and took a few blurry shots, for the quality of which I apologise. It was a wonderful experience to be so close to these giants of the sea.

## Over Puerto Cayo to Manta

Still with the impressive images of the whales in our heads, we say goodbye to Montañita and continue our journey northwards along the coast.

As the roads here are better than in the Oriente, and we always paid about $1 an hour to drive, it was even cheaper and quicker here. Unfortunately, the weather was not so pleasant and it was raining when we arrived in Puerto Cayo.

To be honest, the town didn't seem very inviting and closed at the time, which could also be due to the weather. So we decided to hop straight on the next bus and continue on to Manta, where we arrived in the evening.

Manta served as a stopover for us, a quick refuelling, getting cash from the bank, not without problems, buying food and then on we go.

## Over Montechristi to Atacames

Unfortunately, time is running out, so we can only make a short stopover in Montechristi. The town is famous for its Superfino hats, so I couldn't resist buying one as a souvenir. I probably fulfil every cliché of the European tourist.

After an hour, we continued our journey and reached our destination for the day, Atacames, in the afternoon. The welcoming committee was already waiting for us on the beach. These free-roaming dogs are obviously not very popular but they were peaceful and entertained us well.

And so our journey today ends with a spectacular sunset and a view of the Isla de los pájaros. We've also got to say goodbye to the sea, because next time we're heading back to the Andes.

# Mi tiempo en Ecuador – Un informe de viaje – parte 4

Esta es la cuarta parte de mi informe de viaje desde Ecuador. La ruta de hoy nos lleva vía Guayaquil y La Libertad hasta Montañita, desde allí más al norte por la costa del Pacífico hasta llegar a Atacames y tener que despedirnos de la costa.

Lamentablemente, casi no hay fotos utilizables del viaje a la costa, ya que la mayor parte del tiempo viajábamos de noche y podíamos dormir cuando no teníamos una ópera sonando a todo volumen en el televisor del autobús. Así que aquí sólo hay una foto simbólica del viaje en autobús.

Tras cambiar de autobús en plena noche en la estación de autobuses de Guayaquil, viajamos hasta La Libertat. El viaje terminó allí porque ese día no había más autobuses en dirección norte. Afortunadamente, encontramos una camioneta que nos llevó a Montañita en un banco de madera en la parte trasera. Un placer dudoso, pero llegamos a nuestro destino por la noche.

## Montañita y las ballenas

Montañita me impresionó. Aunque puede que la pequeña ciudad no sea típica de Ecuador, el encanto hippie y el inesperado ambiente festivo de la ciudad supusieron un bienvenido contraste con los viajes en autobús de los días anteriores.

Encontramos un lugar donde alojarnos y pronto exploramos la vida nocturna de la ciudad y la playa. Mis pies tocaron por primera vez el agua del Pacífico. Qué contraste con la selva en tan poco tiempo. Un momento realmente conmovedor.

Y luego está el momento en que Bud Spencer y Terence Hill doblan la esquina de repente. Esta iglesia y los buitres recuerdan mucho al "Salvaje Oeste". Y ahí es donde estamos.

### Avistamiento de ballenas con discapacidad

O la hora feliz de la noche anterior fue un poco larga o no tolero muy bien las olas. En fin, estamos en un pequeño barco a media hora de la costa del Pacífico. Paso la mayor parte del tiempo tumbado para no volver a escupir el contenido de mi estómago en los pies del capitán.

Y de repente las ballenas están ahí. Sólo por un momento, breve pero mágico. Hice acopio de toda mi energía y tomé unas cuantas fotos borrosas, por cuya calidad pido disculpas. Fue una experiencia maravillosa estar tan cerca de estos gigantes del mar.

## De Puerto Cayo a Manta

Todavía con las impresionantes imágenes de las ballenas en la cabeza, nos despedimos de Montañita y continuamos nuestro viaje hacia el norte por la costa.

Como las carreteras aquí son mejores que en Oriente, y siempre pagábamos alrededor de 1 dólar la hora por conducir, aquí era incluso más barato y rápido. Por desgracia, el tiempo no era tan agradable y llovía cuando llegamos a Puerto Cayo.

Para ser sinceros, la ciudad no parecía muy acogedora y cerrada en ese momento, lo que también podía deberse al tiempo. Así que decidimos subirnos directamente al siguiente autobús y continuar hasta Manta, adonde llegamos por la tarde.

Manta nos sirvió de escala, un rápido repostaje, sacar dinero del banco, no sin problemas, comprar comida y a seguir.

## De Montechristi a Atacames

Por desgracia, el tiempo apremia, así que sólo podemos hacer una breve parada en Montechristi. La ciudad es famosa por sus sombreros Superfino, así que no pude resistirme a comprar uno como recuerdo. Probablemente cumplo todos los tópicos del turista europeo.

Después de una hora, continuamos nuestro viaje y llegamos a nuestro destino del día, Atacames, por la tarde. El comité de bienvenida ya nos esperaba en la playa. Evidentemente, estos perros libres no son muy populares, pero eran pacíficos y nos entretuvieron bien.

Y así termina nuestro viaje de hoy, con una espectacular puesta de sol y una vista de la Isla de los pájaros. También tenemos que despedirnos del mar, porque la próxima vez volveremos a los Andes.

Wow, it looks like quite the journey. I hope you got to enjoy seeing the whales a bit between being sick. I got seasick my last time on a small boat like that, and it was quite the unpleasant experience. Now, I will always bring some motion sickness pills just incase. Thanks for sharing!
