I forget why it's named that, but the idea is this: public discourse is limited to 2 positions along a spectrum of ideas, and any discussion beyond these 2 positions is forbidden. For example, when it comes to government some of us can take a position which favors "progressive" taxation of income, and some of us can take a position which favors a flat tax on income. We can debate any point between these positions. But if we take a position such as abolishing income tax altogether, then there is outcry from the corporate media or the government. The Overton Window provides the illusion of robust debate when in fact it can cover a small percentage of the spectrum of ideas.
