If a few years ago you had told me that I would enjoy writing so much, I would have said you were crazy.

Nowadays, I spend 90% of my day in the hospital. More than once, I’ve even forgotten what time I’m supposed to leave.

Like everything, there are better days and worse days, but the routine is almost the same. The workload is what varies.

The Cuban healthcare system is experiencing a massive exodus of professionals, so those of us who remain have to take on more work. Without any say in it.

Evaluating so many patients and repeating the same thing day after day is repetitive and tedious.

But each patient is a world of their own.

When it comes time to evaluate (write in the medical records), it means you have seen the patients.

Every morning, coming in to say good morning and seeing how the patient’s face lights up just by seeing you is priceless.

In my case, I enjoy knowing how my patients are doing; I take my time, and we talk about almost everything. Many even tell me about their TV programming.

In fact, many stay in touch after leaving the hospital.

When the weekend comes and I change my routine, I feel strange.

I hate the part of writing so many stories. But what comes before it, I love.

Without a doubt, one of the best things about being a doctor, about saving lives, about so much sacrifice.

That gratitude and those smiles are worth more than any money.

And yes, it’s my favorite part of my daily routine. Even if it takes me longer than it should, it’s something I wouldn’t change.
