# Parasites and adrenaline 🦠🔋

There is so much to Returnal. If you are worried that the game may be repetitive, don't believe that for a second. Even though you will find yourself frequently starting over at the same place over and over, things still manage to feel different every single time.

Some people may be upset that the game doesn't explain much to you and leaves you to figure it out on your own, but it feels so rewarding once you understand how certain things work. Let's take parasites and adrenaline for instance.

Parasites are sentient creatures that attach to your suit. They provide a bonus that lasts only during your current cycle. Of course, a game of high difficulty like Returnal doesn't just give you some added bonuses without also including some negative things to deal with. You can have as many as six parasites attached to you at once and the more you have, the more Selene starts to look like an alien herself. It becomes a difficult decision each time you find a new parasite, do the positives outweigh the negatives?

Adrenaline is another thing that the game throws at you without much explaining. The longer you stay alive and the more enemies that you defeat, the higher your adrenaline level goes. Adrenaline levels are increased every three hostiles that you kill and it maxes out at level 5. Each level provides a unique effect that stacks with the previous level. Having maxed out adrenaline will make the task of fighting enemies somewhat less difficult, but still not easy. One thing to note is that instead of your adrenaline resetting when you die and return to your ship, it resets when you take damage. Yeah, I tried to tell you that this game was not easy.
