# Leap is a creative game, but lacks some things ๐ŸŽฎ

My guess is that you most likely have never heard of the video game called Leap. It's a first-person shooter that has been in pre-release on PC for about a year and just launched into full release on both PC and consoles.

I'm sure that now you can see this game looks pretty cool. The massive multiplayer maps remind me of Battlefield games. The movement is on the same level of Titanfall in terms of speed and traversal. The guns have your typical Halo-esque feel.

I assumed it would be a free-to-play title, but that is not the case. It costs $30, although PlayStation did have a PS Plus member discount for only $23. It has microtransactions along with that initial price tag, two things I do not like seeing together. I figured about $25 would be worth it just in case the game was amazing.

I started with a round of PvE to get accustomed to how the game plays. You have a cable that can attach to pretty much anything and pull you toward it. It reminds me so much of swinging around in a Spider-Man game. If you are looking to cover long distances, there are no vehicles. You do however have a hoverboard, which can take you pretty high in the sky and moves at a high rate of speed.

After I figured out how the game plays, I jumped into what I was most hyped for. PvP. I have been dying for some new type of multiplayer FPS. I enjoyed Splitgate for a while but got tired of it. Ubisoft's xDefiant F2P fps still isn't out. So Leap was one of my best options to satisfy this craving. 

The first thing to mention is that there really does not seem to be a large community playing this game. I kept getting put in matches with the same people on PC that have been playing for a year and were godly. I had a few good moments, but it was mostly just me getting raped every time I spawned. You can have private matches, but good luck finding people to play with, maybe on their Discord. 

The skill cap on this game is extremely high. Beginners matched up with advanced players is a supreme imbalance and makes the game no fun at all. This is the reason that I think the game will be forced to go F2P at some point if it wants to have any chance of survival.

The gunplay is pretty enjoyable, not the best, but slightly above average. The maps are stunning and absolutely gigantic. The large maps mixed with the fun traversal methods make getting around a jolly old time. That is if you don't get sniped by the campers on top of some rock or building that you can hardly even see.

What it lacks in community, it makes up for in polish. It runs very well on my PS5 and the resolution seems at or close to 4K. I'm sure PC and Xbox are the same. There weren't major bugs like the launch of Battlefield 2042. There may not be a huge variety in terms of the different classes, but they do offer some customization as you level them up. You can certainly find a play style that suits you. 

I honestly haven't been playing this game a whole lot. It's just so frustrating. I'm thinking of getting back into the PvE because I did have a lot of fun with that. Fighting hordes of enemies with some teammates can be a lot of fun and also less punishing. 

If you wonder whether or not I'd recommend this game, I sadly have to say no. It feels like a big waste of money to me because there just aren't enough new people playing. The beta testers are seasoned and know exactly what's going on, meanwhile poor newbies like you and I are forced to endure constant suffering.  

As I mentioned before, I have a strong feeling that the game will eventually go F2P. By that time, yes I'd say it will be worth checking out. I imagine an influx of new users during that time, which I wish would have happened at the launch. They didn't really promote the game all that well and nobody really knows about it. Their Twitter barely has 3,000 followers for instance. I do still have faith though, just not a ton.

Shooters with extra movement options is something that always tickles my brain on the mere concept with how otherwise entirely grounded shooters seem to be today (outside of the near extint Arena Shooters), but if this is a game that's indeed focused on multiplayer...then I'm surprised that they didn't go for free to play from the get go, as the comments on that trailer seem to echo that sentiment of "would be cool to try it out if it was F2P".

It would be great if it did though and had more people give it a try, but at the same time I'm not sure if it will stick out enough in the crowd of games today to survive long enough...which unfortunately seems to be the main risk that games that try to go in more creative ways go if they don't go ALL the way to really look like a different taste of game 

Hi-Fi Rush felt like the release of a cel-shaded game in a time where there hadn't been a big high-profile cel-shaded game in forever; the game quality and everything it had as well as releasing finished was everything in there...but you have to admit that the striking visuals must have pulled more than one easily as well. With how there's a lot of realistic/semi-realistic games today, they either need to give the game a very strong identity to counter that...or to play with their presentation choices so that it is more noticeable.

All in all...well, at least you had a fun time with the PvE mode; hopefully it will get better later on  so that you can get more out of that price for the game.

I had a similar feeling when Splitgate released. The portals added. Whole new element of tactics. The same can be said for Leapโ€™s traversal mechanics. 

I feel like Leap will die off before it gets a chance to shine. Much like one of my favorite hero shooters ever Lawbreakers.

Reminds me of what happened with Rumbleverse. Heard people enjoyed it, but despite that, it didn't make enough noise after a whole year and is now going to shut down. Too bad that this is what comes often from live service games where online-exclusive multiplayer is the focus but the future replayability of the game is forever at odds if it doesn't break big numbers. So these type of games end up buried unless someone figures out a way to make fanmade servers (if they don't get shutdown by IP owners), but it is a far cry from what some people can do with older shooters and games that are long inactive but at best can be revived, and at most can be explored offline...

IF you can get into a good game, it is fun. Thatโ€™s very hard to do that right now because there are a lot of sweats ๐Ÿฅต and not many new players.

Doesn't really look like my kind of thing. Also doesn't help that I'm horrible at aiming with controllers. I ended up dropping Ghost of Tsushima after the first act. All the missions are pretty much the same and even though the world is beautiful it gets quite repetitive and bland after a while. I just finished Mortal Shell which I really enjoyed and gave the Surge a go today. Seems pretty solid.

Being unable to get in quality games sort of ruins the experience. It regularly put me into lobbies where I was the only player. Sucks that even though it just came out, nobody is playing it.
