Greetings, friends of silverbloggers. Fifteen days ago, I wrote a post about my maternal grandfather, in which I gave a brief overview of my perception of the man he was. Today, I want to talk about experiences that are closer to home and that have remained with me as part of those memories. As I mentioned, my grandfather was a foreman on cocoa plantations on the coast. In one of these towns, Aroa, which no longer exists, he met my grandmother, whom he married and had nine children with. As Venezuelan history changed, so did that of families. In 1935, General Gómez, the dictator who had remained in power for twenty-seven years, died. Venezuela was seen as a thriving and rich nation, as it possessed abundant amounts of so-called black gold, oil, an industry that was beginning to develop and bear fruit. In this process, migratory movements were not long in coming, and entire families left the countryside to move to the cities in search of socioeconomic improvements. My family was no exception, and so they left their hometown for the city, in this case Maracay, the capital of Aragua State. However, during this long journey, my grandfather did not leave his job as a foreman, and my memories place him no longer on cocoa plantations, but on a sugar cane plantation in a more central town, Las Tejerías, located between Maracay and Caracas. We would visit him as a family on this plantation, the extended family, my uncles and cousins. I remember that he had a beautiful house, with a water tank that served as a swimming pool, where we bathed with the joy of the moment. We also rode horses and had big feasts.

This photograph is from that time, with me riding that mare with a cousin. The girl in the background is one of my sisters, and the man is one of my uncles. I remember my grandfather being happy; he was a good host, and on dark nights, the stories of his experiences were always eagerly awaited. I also remember images of his children surrounding him as they talked, because if one thing is certain, it is that everyone loved him. So my image of the womanizer, who had twenty-seven children, is softened. It is still a reality that I met many of these children at these gatherings, which suggests that this fact was not relevant, but rather understood as something natural. My mother, with all the responsibilities she had, such as raising five children on her own and working “to get them through life,” always found time to take my grandfather places, especially when he could no longer drive. From these moments, images of trips to the coast come to mind. We were a little older, and we were getting impatient because the road was very long, as we had to stop in the villages so that my grandfather could talk or greet an old friend. Amidst the laughter of the teenagers that we were, we found it very funny that his partner would occasionally say to my mother: “Gladys, stop there for a moment to say hello to the girls,” and the girls were “old women” who I estimate were over sixty years old. Now that my sisters and I have reached that age, we laugh with the complicity that comes from shared experiences, because when we go to meet up with some friends, we say with a touch of irony and nostalgia: “I'm going to have coffee with the ‘girls.’” This single term, “the girls,” immediately takes us back to that time of childhood and adolescence, to that common place called family, with which we built a world of intimate experiences that time has softened.

As I write, the images pass by like a carousel of slides, and among them, I find a trip that my mother, my grandfather, his partner, and I took. It was a long weekend trip in which we traveled almost 800 km from the city where we lived, Maracay, to a town on the border with Colombia, in the so-called Venezuelan Guajira. I must have been about twelve years old. The purpose of the trip was to find a medicinal plant that the indigenous people of the area cultivated to make a natural remedy and which, according to my grandfather's information, would cure his diabetes. I can say that the long and exhausting journey in the heat of the highways was pleasant. I remember these three adults who never stopped talking, laughing, and enjoying the trip. But what struck me most was that Nicolasa, my grandfather's wife, let me rest my head on her lap and stroked my head as I fell asleep, a gesture I had never seen my grandmothers do. Now I think that perhaps for her, it was a way of getting closer to the daughter she never had.

#

Translated with www.

[Be Entrepreneur]( https://peakd.com/c/hive-140971/created)

Hermosos recuerdos.
