Hi guys. I hope you are having a nice week. Antalya, the city where I live, is quite crowded these days due to the holiday. I think this is something to be happy about, as I could not fit this beautiful touristic city with the loneliness that experienced during the pandemic period. I hope those days will never come back.

One of the things that makes me most happy these days is the opening of visits to ancient cities. Some days I feel the need to get away from the crowds and visit the legacies left to us by the ancient civilizations that lived in these lands. Yesterday was one of those days and I didn't realize how I found myself on the road to Demre. It had been a while since I had seen this magnificent capital of "the land of light". I used to visit the area every week when I was a tourist guide. I hadn't been here in a while.

*Merhaba arkadaşlar, hayat nasıl gidiyor? Umarım güzel bir hafta geçiriyorsunuzdur. Yaşadığım şehir olan Antalya bugünlerde bayram dolayısıyla bayağı bir kalabalık. Bu sevinilecek bir durum bence, nitekim bu turistik şehre pandemi döneminde yaşadığı yalnızlık ve boynu büküklüğü yakıştıramadım. Umarım o günler bir daha geri gelmemek üzere tarihe gömülür.*

*Bugünlerde beni en çok sevindiren olaylardan biri antik şehirlere ziyaretlerin açılması. Bazı günler kalabalıklardan uzaklaşıp bu topraklarda yaşamış eski uygarlıkların bize bıraktıkları mirasları ziyaret etme ihtiyacı hissediyordum. Dün böyle günlerden biriydi ve kendimi nasıl Demre yolunda bulduğumu ben de anlamadım. Işık ülkesinin bu ihtişamlı başkentini görmeyeli bir süre olmuştu. Eskiden turist reherliği yaptığım dönemde her hafta bölgeyi ziyaret ederdim. Birkaç yıldır gitmemiştim.*

### Demre / Myra - The Capital of the Land of Light

Myra, today's Demre, was once the most important city of the Lycian state. Therefore, we should not be surprised to find a sarcophagus, sculpture, historical structure and ruins at every step here. These lands were one of the most important centers during the Lycian, Roman and Byzantine periods, and as a result of witnessing these rich civilizations closely, there are many places to visit in the region today. I was able to fit only a small part of them into my one day trip. Next time I will have to arrange my tour for 2 days because there were more places in Demre I wanted to visit.

### *Demre / Myra - Işık Ülkesinin Başkenti*

*Myra, yani günümüzdeki adıyla Demre bir zamanlar Likya devletinin en önemli kentiydi. Bu yüzden burada her adımda bir lahite, heykele, tarihi yapıya ve kalıntılara rastladığımıza şaşırmamamız gerekir. Bu topraklar Likya, Roma, Bizans dönemlerinde en önemli merkezlerden biriydi ve bu zengin medeniyetlere yakından tanıklık etmelerinin bir sonucu olarak bölgede günümüzde hayranlıkla izlenebilecek yerler çok fazla. Ben bir günlük gezime bunlardan sadece küçük bir kısmını sığdırabildim. Bir dahaki gelişimde turumu 2 günlük yapmam gerektiği kesin, çünkü gezmek istediğim daha çok yer vardı.*

Demre is one of the touristic districts of Antalya. It is located 143 km from Antalya. It is between Finike and Kaş districts. If you happen to be in this area, then I highly recommend to visit Demre.

I started my tour in the morning with the St. Nicholas Church. Then I visited the Myra rock tombs and the ancient theatre. In the evening, after visiting the ancient port of Andriake, I returned to Antalya.

*Turuma sabah saatlerinde Aziz Nikolas kilisesi ile başladım. Daha sonra Myra kaya mezarlarını ve antik tiyatroyu ziyaret ettim. Akşama doğru Andriake antik limanını da ziyaret ettikten sonra Antalya'ya döndüm.*

### St. Nicholas Church

Myra has a special importance as it is the land where St. Nicholas, an important historical and religious figure, lived. It is known that St. Nicholas was born in Patara, another important city of Lycia, which is also within the borders of Antalya. Saint Nicholas, who was born into a wealthy and religious family, after losing his parents in an epidemic moved to live with his uncle, who was bishop in Myra. Here he helped the poor and needy while improving his knowledge on religious matters. After a while, he became a very important person loved by the people with his good deeds. On the other hand, he was tortured and even thrown into prison because he lived in the period when Christianity was just beginning to spread. After he died, this church was built in Myra, the city where he lived and worked as a bishop.

### *St. Nicholas Kilisesi*

*Myra önemli bir tarihi ve dini şahsiyet olan Aziz Nikolas'ın yaşadığı topraklar olduğu için de ayrı bir öneme sahiptir. Aziz Nikolas'ın yine Antalya sınırları içinde bulunan Likya'nın bir başka önemli kenti Patara'da doğduğu bilinmektedir. Varlıklı ve dindar bir ailenin çocuğu olarak dünyaya geldikten sonra anne ve babasını bir salgında kaybeden Aziz Nikolas Myra'da yaşayan ve psikoposluk yapan amcasının yanına yerleşir. Burada bir taraftan dini konularda bilgilerini geliştirirken diğer taraftan fakirlere ve ihtiyaç sahiplerine yardım eder. Yaptıkları iyiliklerle bir süre sonra halkın sevdiği çok önemli biri haline gelir. Diğer taraftan Hıristiyanlık dininin yeni yayılmaya başladığı dönemde yaşadığından işkenceler görür ve hatta zindana atılır. Yaşama gözlerini yumduktan sonra anısına yaşadığı ve psikoposluk yaptığı şehir olan Myra'da bu kilise yapılır.*

The church was later destroyed by earthquakes and attacks on the city. It was restored by the Byzantine emperor in the 11th century. The building, which has survived to a great extent, bears the traces of the Byzantine period. In addition, it is possible to come across traces of restorations made by the Russian Tsar in the recent past. Today, restoration and excavation works continue in the region.

There are various legends about St. Nicolas that have survived from the past to the present. Some of these legends have led him to be identified with Santa Claus. In one of the most told legends, it is told that St. Nicholas, who was the protector of the poor and children, helped a poor man get his daughters married. Due to lack of money, the man could not prepare his daughters' dowry and get them married. St. Nicholas, who heard about this, prepared 3 sacks of gold. He threw one of these golden sacks into the house from the eldest girl's window at night while everyone was sleeping. Since there are no windows in the other girls' rooms, he throws their gold into the chimney. It is believed that the tradition of throwing gifts down the chimney of Santa Claus came from here. Of course, these are all legends told among the people. In fact, what is known is that a benevolent bishop named St. Nicholas lived in this region, won the love of the people for his deeds and became a saint after his death.


*Aziz Nicolas ile ilgili geçmişten günümüze gelmiş çeşitli efsaneler vardır. Bu efsanelerden bazıları onun Santa Claus (Noel baba) ile özdeşleştirilmesine yol açmıştır. En çok anlatılan bir efsanede fakirlerin ve çocukların koruyucusu olan Azizin yoksul bir adamın kızlarını evlendirmesine yardımcı olduğu anlatılıyor. Adam parasızlıktan dolayı kızlarının çeyizini hazırlayıp onları evlendiremiyormuş. Bunun haberini alan Aziz Nikolas bir gece 3 tane altın kesesi hazırlar. Gece herkes uyurken altın keselerinden birini büyük kızın penceresinden içeriye atar. Diğer kızların odasında pencere bulunmadığından onların altınlarını bacadan içeriye atar. Noel ababanın bacadan hediye atma geleneğinin buradan geldiğine inanılır. Tabii bunlar hepsi halk arasında anlatılan efsaneler. Gerçekte bilinen bir şey ise Aziz Nikolas isimli yardımsever bir psikoposun bu bölgede yaşamış, yaptıklarından dolayı halkın sevgisini kazanmış ve ölümünden sonra aziz mertebesine ulaşmış olduğu.*

Other frescoes contain depictions of Jesus Christ. In the photos below, you can see the frescoes of the prophet Jesus giving food to the apostles and depicted with the Virgin Mary and St. John.

The frescoes in the church were made during the Byzantine emperor, who had rebuilt the church in the 11th century.

There are various sarcophagi in the church. One of them belongs to St. Nicolas.

The front of St. Nicholas' tomb was very crowded. There were people worshiping there. It is said that some of the bones in the tomb were smuggled from here by the traders, and the rest are exhibited in the Antalya museum.

*St. Nikolas'ın mezarının önü çok kalabalıktı. Burada ibadet eden insanlar vardı. Söylenilene göre mezarda yer alan kemiklerin bir kısmı tüccarlar tarafından buradan kaçırılmış, geri kalanlar Antalya müzesinde sergileniyor.*

The mosaics on the floor are among the works that have come until today.

Since the ceiling of the church was completely destroyed, it was restored again.

Saint Nicholas was also believed to be the protector of sailors. The anchor and cross relief carved on this marble found in the church is one of the best proofs of this.

*Aziz Nikolas'ın aynı zamanda denizcilerin koruyucusu olduğuna inanılıyordu. Kilisede bulunan bu mermer üzerine işlenen çapa ve haç kabartması da bunun en iyi kanıtlarından biri.*

After my church visit, I turned the route to the rock tombs. Since it's been a while since I've been here, I opened the navigation so that I wouldn't go the wrong way. Navigation took me on this road I've never been to before 😀

*Kilise ziyaretimden sonra rotayı kaya mezarlıklarına çevirdim. Buraya gelmeyeli bir süre olduğu için yanlış yollardan gitmeyeyim diye navigasyonu açmıştım. Navigasyon beni daha önce hiç gitmediğim bu yola götürdü* 😀

It was a place surrounded by greenery with greenhouses, fruit trees, and houses. Since the local people are engaged in agriculture, there are many greenhouses here. People are very friendly. I came across a local woman here and asked if I was on the right road for the rock tombs. She gave very good directions by saying "It is at the bottom of the mountains.". Indeed, the tombs were carved into the mountains and cliffs, so if I followed Taurus, I was sure to get there.

*Burası yeşilikler içinde seraların, meyve ağaçlarının ve evlerin bulunduğu bir yerdi. Yöre halkı tarımla uğraştığından burada çok sayıda sera karşımıza çıkıyor. İnsanları çok sıcakkanlılar. Burada karşıma çıkan bir teyzeye doğru yolda mıyım diye kaya mezarlıklarını sordum. "Dağların dibinde kızım" diyerek çok güzel yol tarifi verdi. Gerçekten de mezarlar dağlara ve kayalıklara oyulmuştu, yani Torosarı takip edersem oraya ulaşacağım kesindi.*

### Myra Rock Tombs

In the ancient city of Myra, we can see historical ruins from various civilizations. The most impressive of these is the necropolis, the city of the dead, from the Lycian period. Since the people living here believed in life after death, they carved the graves into the rocks as houses and left food, gold and jewelry inside. They also made reliefs on the graves about the life of the deceased. The rock tombs have survived to the present day, but the reliefs on them were mostly plundered. However, it is possible to come across these reliefs on some tombs.

### *Myra Kaya Mezarlıkları*

*Myra antik kentinde çeşitli uygarlıklardan kalma tarihi kalıntıları birarada izleyebiliyoruz. Bunlardan en etkileyicisi Likya döneminden kalma nekropol yani ölüler şehridir. Burada yaşayan halk ölümden sonra yaşama inandığından mezarları kayalara ev şeklinde oyup içine yiyecek, altın ve ziynet eşyaları bırakırlarmış. Ayrıca ölen kişinin hayatıyla ilgili mezarların üzerine kabartmalar yaparlarmış. Kaya mezarları günümüze kadar gelip ulaşmış ancak üzerlerindeki kabartmalar çoğunlukla yağmalanmış. Yine de bazı mezarların üzerinde bu kabartmalara rastlamak mümkün.*

In front of the rock tombs, I come across this myrtle tree that gives the city its name. Legend has it that Myra (Myrrha), the daughter of the king of Cyprus, was cursed by Aphrodite. Other gods turn it into a myrtle tree to save it. It is thought that the name of the city comes from this myrtle tree. Some remains were found during the excavations showed that myrtle oil was produced here in ancient times.

Today, the fruits of the myrtle plant are consumed in the provinces of the region and the leaves are used for their healing properties.

*Kaya mezarlıklarının önünde şehre adını veren bu Mersin ağacına rastlıyorum. Efsaneye göre Kıbrıs kralının kızı Myra (Myrrha) Afrodit tarafından lanetlenir. Diğer tanrılar onu kurtarmak için mersin ağacına dönüştürüyorlar. Şehrin adının da bu mersin ağacından geldiği sanılıyor. Burada eski zamanlarda mersin ağacı yağı üretildiğine dair yapılan kazılarda bazı kalıntılar bulunmuştur.*

*Günümüzde de yöre illerde mersin bitkisinin meyveleri tüketilmekte, yaprakları şifa verici özelliğinden dolayı kullanılmaktadır.*

The weather is very hot. But it's worth the climb. I reach this ancient theater above, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful parts of Myra, which has survived from the Romans. It is really impressive that the theater, which has suffered many earthquakes and natural disasters, is still in good condition today. Various theatrical masks were also found here. Pictures of these dramatic masks worn by theater actors on their faces at that time are among the remnants that have survived since they were carved on stones. It is also possible to come across many mythological characters carved into stones.

*Hava çok sıcak. Ama yukarılara çıkmaya değer. Yukarıda Myra'nın şüphesiz en güzel eserlerinden biri Romalılardan günümüze kadar ulaşmış olan bu antik tiyatroya ulaşıyorum. Çok depremler ve doğal afetler geçirmiş olan tiyatronun günümüzde hala iyi durumda olması gerçekten çok etkileyici. Burada ayrıca çeşitli tiyatro maskeleri bulunmuş. O dönem tiyatro oyuncularının yüzlerine taktıkları bu dramatik maskelerin resimleri taşların üzerine oyulmuş olduklarından günümüze kadar ulaşmayı başaran kalıntıları arasında. Ayrıca taşlara oyulmuş çok sayıda mitolojik karaktere rastlamak mümkün.*

There are several rock tombs in the upper parts of the ancient theater.

There is also an Ottoman period castle on the hill in this ancient city. That's why Myra has an important place as a witness of various civilizations.

There is a small cafe in the ancient city of Myra. Here you can enjoy the view of the amphitheater by drinking coffee. There are a few souvenir shops near.

My visit to the ancient city of Myra ended here and the ancient port was next. This place is located in an area of Demre called Çayağzı. It is a beautiful place in greenery. This is how I satisfied my longing for nature.

*Myra antik kenti ziyaretim burada bitti ve sırada antik liman ziyaretim vardı. Burası Demre'nin Çayağzı denen bir bölgesinde bulunuyor. Yeşillikler içerisinde çok güzel bir yer. Doğaya olan hasretimi böylece gidermiş oldum.*

### Andriake Ancient Port and City

Another impressive historical city of the region is the ancient port city of Andriake. This is another important city of the Lycian civilization. Very few structures have survived from this magnificent port of Myra until today. Agora, church and synagogue ruins can be viewed here.

*Bölgenin bir başka etkileyici tarihi kenti ise Andriake antik liman kentidir. Burası Likya uygarlığının bir başka önemli kentidir. Myra'nın bu ihtişamlı limanından günümüze kadar çok az yapı gelip ulaşmıştır. Burada agora, kilise ve sinagog kalıntıları izlenebilir.*

The museum of Lycian civilizations in the city of Andriake is one of the places worth seeing. Numerous amphorae, anchors, pots, coins and other historical items found in the ancient city are exhibited here.

*Andriake kentinin içinde bulunan Likya uygarlıkları müzesi görülmeye değer yerlerden biridir. Burada antik kentten bulunan çok sayıda amforalar, çapalar, saksılar, sikkeler ve diğer tarihi eşyalar sergilenmektedir.*

Another feature of the city of Andriake is that there is the Demre bird paradise here. The wetlands on the side of the ancient city have turned into a haunt of birds over time. It is possible to come across many bird species here, especially in the cold months.

*Andriake kentinin bir başka özelliği ise burada Demre kuş cenneti'nin bulunması. Antik kentin yan tarafında bulunan sulak alanlar zamanla kuşların  uğrak yerine dönüşmüş. Burada özellikle soğuk aylarda çok fazla kuş çeşidine rastlamak mümkün.*

This watchtower was built for those who want to watch the birds.

I think this place might be good for bird watching too.

There weren't many birds because I visited the paradise during the hot hours. I would like to spend more time here next time. After having a conversation with a women who grazes her goats here, I learned that the most birds come during the winter months. I thought I'd take a picture of a posing goat while I came across it 🙂

#### How to get there?
These three places I visited are located in the Demre district of Antalya. You can reach here from Antalya by bus or private cars. The church of St. Nicholas is located in the town center, the ancient city of Myra and the rock tombs are 2 km from the center, and the Andriake port and Demre bird paradise are located in the Cayagzi region, which is 5 km from the center.

Aziz Nikolas kilisesi ilçe merkezinde, Myra antik kenti ve kaya mezarlıkları merkeze 2 km mesafede, Andriake limanı ve Demre kuş cenneti ise merkeze 5km mesafede olan Çayağzı bölgesinde yer almaktadır.*

#### What to Wear
I recommend wearing shoes suitable for climbing, comfortable clothes, hats and glasses in the warmer months.

#### Ticket fees

The entrance fee to the church is 70 Turkish lira (approx. 8.17 USD), the entrance to the ancient city of Myra is 55 lira (6.42 USD), and the entrance to the port of Andriake and the Lycian civilizations museum is 12 lira (1.40 USD). Visiting hours are mostly from 10:00 to 19:00, but it is recommended to confirm before visiting.

My one day trip ended here. It would have been fun to watch the sunset through the pillars in Andriake port. Maybe next time. I recommend it if you will visit, it is one of the places to watch the most beautiful sunset among bird sounds and historical ruins.
