Es uno de los mejores **poetas latinoamericanos**. Premio Nobel en 1971, de personalidad muy vitalista. Fue cónsul de su país en distintos lugares del mundo. Su tema principal es el **amor**, y su producción **poética** es amplísima, por ejemplo:

* Una primera etapa modernista con obras como Crepusculario y Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada.

* Obras inspiradas en la **vanguardia** y el **surrealismo** como Residencia en la tierra, con una amarga concepcion del hombre y una poesía hermética.

* Obras comprometidas políticamente, de tendencia **marxista**. Tercera residencia, con una parte titulada **España en el corazón** en apoyo a la España republicana.

* **Poesía americanista**: de tono épico, con su gran obra Canto general, dedicada a América y a su historia. Su lenguaje es claro, directo y combativo. Una de las partes más destacadas es Alturas de **Machu Picchu**.

* **Poesía sencilla**: En Odas elementales, con tono optimista, dedicada a cantar realidades cotidianas.

* **Poemas personales**: Estravagario, Cien sonetos de amor y Memorial de Isla Negra.
