In the post two days ago I wrote about the initiators of creativity as being the first of 8 dimensions of creative process.  The second dimension of the logical/cyclical method of creating involves: 
Research, Study and Planning
The foundation for creative freedom is preparation. If you are not spontaneously brainstorming or just flowing with creativity preparation will assist in achieving flow. Humanity continues to benefit remarkably from the current Information Age. Ideally this is the precursor to the Creativity Age of the 21st century. Certainly the global challenges we face are in need of creative solutions and I believe we do have the ability to move toward ever more enlightened cultures and civilizations. One of the ways to accomplish both personal and planetary ideals is to research, study and plan for creative solutions.

Research is preparation; it is applying the due diligence to achieve our objectives, desires and to answer our own questions. We also begin to refine our questions as we study options and ideas.
Research is searching for information for creative needs and desires. Investigating and studying the array of resources available in the information age can stretch the mind and spark the imagination. There is so much out there on any topic that a directed focus may be needed to reach desired goals in a timely fashion. Otherwise one can become quite consumed wandering through an immense maze of relevant and irrelevant information. Focus research on important tasks and then plan. What do you want to do with knowledge and information now? Planning allows creative freedom and expression to emerge from a structure.
 
As we build structures of knowledge we increase the quality of creative thinking and the ability to solve challenges. The resources available for research, study and planning are extraordinary and the creative person will explore those resources from many sources: libraries, museums, the internet, quality TV programming and any chosen source of information or experience. This can be a discipline that functions continually for a creative life.
