Which came first?

It seems to be a very simple questions but to my knowledge there is no agreement as to the answer.

I always remember being told..."Don't Count Your Chickens before they Hatch"  

or this..."Don't keep all your Eggs in one Basket"

I think all of this is good advice but still does nothing to answer that age old question.

## Don't Count Your Chickens before they Hatch

I love this saying and try to always follow it.  To me, this means that you should not spend money that is not already in your hand or in one of your accounts that you could easily access it.

A good example is when you do a side job for someone and agree on an amount, let's say of $100 for moving some boxes on a Friday.  The person writes you a check when you finish and you go out to the store on Saturday and buy a pair of new shoes.

However when you go to the back on Monday to deposit the check, the bank will not except it.  They say it is a forgery.  You call the person but their phone is disconnected and you have no way of getting the $100 that you have already spent.  This is what I call "Counting your Chickens before they Hatch".  You spent the money that you never really had in the first place even though you believed that you could **"count"** on the check being good.


## Don't keep all your Eggs in one Basket

This saying is about diversification.  However most people do not really know what that may mean but the saying has been around for 100's of years.

So if we begin by thinking of real eggs in a basket, this is the best place to start.  Say you have 10 eggs that you have put in a basket and are carrying them from the hen house.  Along the way, something happens that scares or surprises you, or your trip and fall dropping the basket in either case.  The basket hits a rock and all the eggs break open and now are worthless and can not be used for anything.

If you would have only carried five of the eggs at a time, you would have only lost five of the eggs when the event happened and you would still have five eggs that still had value.  You could learn a lesson from the first event that would help you ensure that the second five do not meet the same fate as the first five.

This saying can be applied to so many things like investing, growing plants, etc...  If you have something that is of value to you and you are able to split it up into smaller bundles, do so and keep it in separate places.
