The lack of progress in our national life is due to the fact that either each passing generation leaves no mark of its achievements for those who come after to improve upon (and this is not true) or that we destroy completely the scientific or social legacy which each passing generation bequeaths to our generation.
In England, France, America and many other Europeans and Asia countries, great names have inspired progress; but in our own Land, there are few, if any, of the great men in our history who inspired in us the will for progress. Each nation or individual has developed along his own selfish line. It was not until after their death that it became clearer that in their generation some of them lived for themselves and not for their country or for the interests of their people but for their acquisition of movable and immovable materialistic possession. However, in spite of the failures of some, a few of Africans in their own day have bequeathed to us the torch of industry, the sacrifice of self in service for others, the need for creativity and inventiveness for an age that wants progress, comfort and peace.
These were men who were disciplined by hard and bitter experiences of life, for the sake of their peoples; they climbed mountains and descended into the valleys; they fought failures and won success; they fought despair and won hope. If they succeeded, why should we fail? Why should we, too, not do all that we can and make a good name in our own age and generation so that ‘on departing from this earthly life’ we may leave behind footprints on the sand of time?
If we have already made a bad name at home, office or in our community or even in our school, we must develop a new character, for it is this that will give us a new name and help us to find a secure place into a worthy fellowship in our age. I once knew a boy was regarded and called dirty in character, he changed his ways and developed a new character because he determined to embrace a new character and God help him; today he has a new and better name. There was a women who could not be surpassed in abuses, drinking, smoking and fights; she was called the iron women not because she strong, but because of her characters, it’s got to a time she had to change her character when she caught her grown-up boy 10years of age smoking hemps and drinking alcoholic, she felt so bad and had to forced herself to changed her bad characters as well because she knows the boy learn from her. Parents be careful of your characters, children learning fast than you expected and they are smart.
