I agree with most of what you said apart from the "irrelevant stuff". I have seen many times SteemIt marketed or prometed as an alternative to Facebook, but with the added benefit of being paid for the posts that you make. Facebook is very 'free' in what you can post - this is part of what makes it so successful.

The mindset you were referring to is therefore promoted by the very people who are promoting SteemIt.
