I agree. The most likely explanation is that Trump does not know what Poland's role in WW II was or couldn't remember it at that time. Trump did not excel academically in his youth. History, particularly of other continents, is one of many topics that has simply never interested him much. A man of this level of awareness of the world has no business being the president of a superpower. He got himself elected because he's really good at persuading crowds, particularly such crowds that are not bothered in the least by his glaring inadequacies in general knowledge. Apparently, there are vast numbers of people in the American hinterlands who basically couldn't give a shit as to what happens in the rest of the world despite the fact that America is deeply involved with the whole world owing to the fact that American interests span the entire globe.

That said, China is the one country with the most potential to threaten America's status as the number one global superpower and Trump seems to be very keenly aware of this. China is an authoritarian surveillance state with its core values at stark odds with freedom.
