Overview of the (modded) Boker Nano Knife.

The Boker Nano was probably the first good knife I purchased when I got into collecting pocket knives. This was back in the time when I was using $10 knives thinking they were the bees knees since I didn't know any better. Spending anymore than $10-15 on a knife at the time just seemed ridiculous to me, though now I laugh about it a bit considering the stuff I've purchased and handled to date. Thanks to a friend persuading me though I decided to spend the money and give it a shot. I very, very quickly grew to love the design and it showed me that there was indeed a difference in quality of knives for the price. I purchased it originally on Amazon for $38 at the time. The price tends to fluctuate on there but will normally be right around $40. The overall length on this knife is 4.75", with a blade length of 1.875". The stubby blade is fairly thick at 0.12", and is made of 440C steel which is very comparable to AUS-8 steel. The frame of the knife is aluminum and comes with stainless steel spacer barrels in the back. The weight is fairly hefty considering it's size coming in at 2.9 ounces, but is very easily manageable.

There were a few things on the knife from the factory that I had an issue with, however, despite how much I really liked the design and blade itself. The first thing was the scale (handle) on the presentation side. It came with a scale made from a material called Zytel. The color was a bright neon green which I didn't even mind since I personally love the color green, however, the feeling of the scale was not so great. It felt very cheap and just like a mediocre plastic. There was an Anso type pattern machined into the Zytel which helped a bit, but I just was not a fan. So, I opted to swap it out with a nice Anso patterned G10 scale. I chose to go with a green and black color for the G10, and had it made by a scale maker named Cash Blades. He was very easy to work with, has fair prices, and had it all done fairly quickly and shipped out to be within about a week.

The other thing I did not like about this knife from the factory was the pocket clip. It was somewhat gaudy and just poorly designed in my opinion, at least. It was somewhat flimsy feeling, wasn't a deep carry clip which I really prefer, and had a bulls-eye design machined into it which I am not a fan of. I opted to instead get a custom titanium deep carry clip made for it by Popscustomclips. Pops is a great maker who is super, super easy to work with and is a very stand up guy in general. I chose to have the titanium clip anodized green to match with the scale side of the knife, and went with his Trinity designed clip. This clip is far, far better than the one that came with it and is well worth the price I paid (Which was right around $25 shipped for it). Pops can make a pocket clip for just about any knife design out there so long as your patient and I highly recommend him if you're in need for a nice deep carry clip!

Besides changing those two things, I did a few other mods just for my personal taste. I gave the frame of the knife a stonewash by tossing it in a box of smooth stones and WD-40 and shaking it for a fairly long, tiring, annoying time. This process can take up to a few hours if you do it by hand, I would recommend doing it in a stone tumbler if you'd like to give it a try. I also tried bronzing the screws and hardware by using the heat anodizing method. If you're interested in doing the same thing with stainless steel screws for your knife, all you need to do is get a cup of windex, something to handle and hold onto the screws with, and an electric stove or butane torch. You just basically heat up the stainless steel at a high temperature until it turns bronze, then toss it into the windex to lock the color in and cool it down. You do need to be careful with how long you heat it for though or it will eventually turn into purplish color or sometimes a crispy burnt bronze color unless you're aiming for that.

The last thing I did was give the blade an acid etch, which was again just for my personal taste. I used PCB Etchant with nail polish (The darker colored spots are the areas I didn't cover with nail polish, while the stainless parts are) and decided to try a feather/paint swab pattern. This is just a type of finish and does not impact the integrity of the blade, though it does eat through the very surface of the metal to create the color/pattern. I think it came out pretty nice and gives the knife a fairly unique look that is eye catching. The etching process is fairly quick, though you need to be careful with handling any kind of acid. This method also only works with stainless steels and does not work with carbon based steels from what I've been told. Thanks for taking a look at my post! If you enjoyed this feel free to give me a follow to see more knife and gun related content in the future!
