Howdy there, folks. Apparently, there's some modicum of interest in knowing about my username and why I chose it. I'm pretty sure most of you can figure out where my name comes from if you were playing horror games anywhere from 2008 to 2013, but for those who don't know let me regale you with some nerd knowledge, suckah. Lets travel back to October of 2008, back to when I was but a wee angst filled teenager obsessed with horror, metal music and video games. Hmm, my tastes in things actually haven't changed all that much from when I was 16 if I think about it.

But, lets get back on track here. Before October of that year, my love of horror games hadn't quite reached the depth that it currently has today. Back then the only horror game series that I found myself really digging was the Resident Evil series, and that honestly was only Resident Evil 2 and 4. I just never got around to playing 1 or 3 until I was older. The third Resident Evil game kind of seemed blah to me as a kid (I was mistaken as fuck on that), and due to the fact that I lacked a playstation when the first Resident Evil came out so I never got to try it. You might be wondering why I didn't have a playstation. Well, in the words of Slingblade, I was justah boy, yuh shouldn'a dun dat. Eventually later on I tried out the first one and quite enjoyed it. But, as much as I loved Resident Evil 2 and 4, I never got to the point of obsession like I did with a certain other game.

https://i.imgur.com/uS5K5OZ.jpg

That certain other game being an amazing fucking piece of video game history called Dead Space. It was released in October which made it the absolute perfect god damn time with Halloween coming around. I didn't even hear anything about the game until just a few days before it was released. Thankfully, a kid I was friends with on the Xbox 360 at the time gave me a heads up and told me a bit about it. I ended up renting it for a weekend after it came out, and holy shit was it the best god damn horror experience I've had the pleasure of having on a video game system. I hadn't ever played a game quite like it, and I don't just mean because it scared the ever living shit out of me (which I loved).

It's hard to explain what just grabbed onto me from this series, mainly because there was so much to it that I loved. I fell down such a deep rabbit hole with this game, and it's stuck with me even 10 years later. The game play was a totally different experience from what I've ever been use to, and the combat was just absolutely brutal. The way you had to take apart your enemies piece by piece was really strange and unique, and made for a very memorable experience. Much more so since a zombie with scythes for hands could be coming after your ass even after you've cut off its legs and head. And, it wasn't just the game play that I found awesome. The universe, the lore/backstory, the creatures and how they've come to exist, the setting, just everything about it is something I really fucking dig.

My love for the game quickly expanded as well, as I started looking into other forms of media that were related. They've made a few animated movies which I picked up as soon as they were released, a couple of books that have to do with the lore taking place hundreds of years before the games even happen, a patch and some other small collectible goodies. I ended up taking my birthday money one year and spending it all on a rare limited edition promo poster for the original game, which ran teenage me about $90-100 shipped. Later on in life I ended up having a hand tooled and painted leather wrap done up for a zippo showing off a necromorph. My love for any and everything Dead Space got to the point that I even got a tattoo from the game on my arm showing off the symbol for the Red Marker. (Picture from right after it was done)

https://i.imgur.com/NevAiOU.jpg

To this day, I've not been able to find another game series that resonated with me as hard as the Dead Space series did. Sadly, the third game was a flop and went in the wrong direction, basically killing the franchise from growing anymore. Even with that happening, Dead Space 1 and 2 are my favorite games, and will always have a place in my heart and collection. I think a lot of my love for the games can be attributed to some of the inspirations for the games, as they come from films that I love too. If you haven't played the games, they take heavily from movies like John Carpenters The Thing, Event Horizon and of course Alien. There were other inspirations as well that I think helped contribute to my tastes. The game heavily draws from the world of parasites/parasitical fungus which I find fascinating. The more I write about it, the more I realize the game was a perfect mixture of things to suck my soul away.

Hopefully that kind of shows/explains why I chose this name. Obviously I'd have to be a fan of the series to pick it, but I'm sure most of you probably didn't know the depth of my fandom for it. I'm actually not sure if I've ever even told a single person how much I fucking love the series on here...Now, I suppose I should hop into the other parts of this challenge that I haven't addressed yet. Apparently I need to tell you guys what my real name is. Well, hold your breaths, here's the big name reveal...My real name is <del>Carl Brutananadilewski</del> Shane. Yeah, yeah. Fuck off with your "Shane, come back shaaaaneee" jokes. You can shove your Walking Dead references up your ass too, fucko. Few people actually address me by that name, most people these days actually call me Blueberry, Booberry, Berry, Murderberry and of course Deadspace.

Would I change the name? Eh, not really. There's really no reason to change it. I'm more than happy to be known as Deadspace.

I guess I need to pick 5 people to bother with doing this. Pray that I do not alter the deal further.

@overkillcoin

@strawhat (This one is probably as obvious as my name, but I wanna see some anime ranting)

@apsu

@saywha (Why saywha over Saywhatnibba, or perhaps Saywhafgt)

@mobbs

The Rules:

Tell us in a post how you chose the current Steemit username you have as well as the story behind it.

Tell us your real name!

If you could change your current username, which name would you choose and why? If you have a possible usernames list, mention it!

Use the tag #steemitnamechallenge so that the creator of the challenge can track all the posts and check them out

Nominate 5 people for this challenge!

Yeah, they definitely aimed for it to feel that way. It continues on into the second game somewhat, since you end up with space dementia basically and see a bunch of crazy shit that isn't happening while you're also dealing with real crazy shit, lol. I really need to get someone to go submit that video to the battle royale subreddit. I don't even think my videos are amazing or anything, but I think that video needs more views.

Altman be praised! :) *Dead Space* is a master-class in everything from game balance to narrative. It's one of my favorite games of all time, so much so that the sequels had no hope of stacking up. Excellent choice for a user name. :)
